I have served as webmaster of ASLO's website since 1995. The ASLO website is among the most popular websites of science societies, garnering several million page views per year. It serves the public as well as ASLO members.

The UH graduate faculty is a subset of the entire faculty. Membership is by application and requires approval of the department’s current graduate faculty. Graduate faculty may serve as advisors and committee members of graduate students. Since my departure from UH, I am now an affiliate member of the Oceanography Department Graduate Faculty.

As C-MORE Associate Director, I helped to create an administrative infrastructure serving a national research center that spanned seven institutions. I accepted a position as Associate Program Director in the Biological Oceanography program to achieve two goals: to gain experience in science administration, and to assess whether I would prefer to contribute to the progress of science in ways other than the incremental progress of an independent research project. I had the opportunity to interact with other research programs and agencies to coordinate activities, including NSF and interagency working groups that led to the development of new… Show more I accepted a position as Associate Program Director in the Biological Oceanography program to achieve two goals: to gain experience in science administration, and to assess whether I would prefer to contribute to the progress of science in ways other than the incremental progress of an independent research project. I had the opportunity to interact with other research programs and agencies to coordinate activities, including NSF and interagency working groups that led to the development of new programs and initiatives. I was responsible for managing a portfolio of 30 funded projects, most of which I had recommended for funding. The majority dealt with aspects of microbial oceanography, and I found it rewarding that the field of microbial oceanography benefited from my expertise and contributions at NSF. NSF program directors routinely interact with other research programs and agencies to coordinate parallel activities and maximize the progress of science. While at SBU I supervised or served on the committees of 4 graduate students, and hosted 11 graduate and undergraduate students as visitors or interns. I also opted to gain teaching skills by volunteering to teach an introductory oceanography course to public school teachers through the School of Professional Development and by developing one of the first online courses offered at Stony Brook. In 1993, Dr. Creighton Wirick assumed the position of Oceanography Division Head and I was appointed Deputy Division Head. I acted as liaison to university partners in the Ocean Margins Program and served as coordinator for OMP cruises. I also gained experience with budget planning for large-scale, multi-institutional projects; strategic compromise; and conflict resolution.

While at Brookhaven National Laboratory, I built an independent research program funded primarily through the Department of Energy. I provided expertise in microbial oceanography and benthic ecology to the Shelf Edge Exchange processes II program, and directed a research team including technician, postdoctoral associate and several students. As with other members of the BNL research group, I participated in the planning and development of the successor Ocean Margins Program, also funded… Show more While at Brookhaven National Laboratory, I built an independent research program funded primarily through the Department of Energy. As with other members of the BNL research group, I participated in the planning and development of the successor Ocean Margins Program, also funded primarily by DOE. After 3 years I was promoted to Oceanographer, equivalent to an academic position of Associate Professor. Four funded proposals to DOE resulted in a total of ca. $2.05M in cumulative funding, a very substantial sum at the time. I continued to direct a research team and hosted several visiting students and scientists. Our research focused on field measurements of microbial processes in the SEEP II and OMP programs, development of a benthic lander for in situ microbial incubations, and development of molecular tools for assessing bacterial diversity and specific growth rate. I arrived at Brookhaven National Laboratory as the recipient of an Alexander Hollaender Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship, conferred by the U.S. Department of Energy. During the ensuing two years I acted as a largely independent researcher advised by Dr. Paul Falkowski, then Oceanography Division Head. My primary role was as resident microbial oceanographer for the new DOE-funded Shelf Edge Exchange Processes II program.

This postdoctoral position was obtained competitively and included salary, an independent laboratory, modest research funding, and the freedom to collaborate as I wished with Marine Institute and other University of Georgia faculty. During this period I transitioned from a primary focus on invertebrate benthic ecology to microbial ecology and oceanography, working with Drs. S. Newell, R. Fallon, B. Sherr and E. Sherr.
