I lead a basic science research group with strong clinical collaborations, investigating the mechanisms of muscle wasting in ageing as well as acute and chronic diseases including COPD, intensive care unit acquired weakness and pulmonary arterial hypertension.We are interested in the factors that drive wasting and the mechanisms that make some people more susceptible to lose muscle mass. Our approach is to gain insight from the analysis of clinical samples to develop testable hypotheses in appropriate model systems.Areas of expertise include miRNAs, TGF-beta family growth regulators and their signalling pathways.
