Editorial and design development project for Egmont Publishing, working on a redesign of market-leading boys' title Toxic.

In this role, I created exciting, surprising and impactful magazines, with particular focus on outstanding point of sale material such as covers, polybags and gifts.The job required comprehensive knowledge of current trends in design as well as the teen market.I also lent a hand on numerous other Egmont titles for children of various ages, from pre-school to teen.Responsible for the day-to-day running of the art department, including:● Supervising freelance designers● Turning creative concepts into layouts following the brief supplied by the editor● Maintaining a steady flow of material to ensure the magazine ran to schedule● Checking all output for quality and house style and managing the design team● Sourcing, choosing, commissioning and briefing illustrators and photographers● Contributing ideas for editorial content● Devising and designing covermounts and promotional material● Monitoring developments in the magazine market to ensure the magazine remained competitive● Working on new launches, including the successful pitch for the Minecraft Official Magazine.

I've written the Doctor Who Annual since 2015, and have also completed a series of four storybooks based on emojis.

I was deputy editor of Doctor Who Adventures for two years, including three months as acting editor.Responsibilities included:● Working closely with the Editor and Editorial Director to develop new ideas and formats, delivering significant improvements to the quality and tone of all content● With the Art Editor, developing a new visual style for the magazine, including a new logo● Devising, planning and launching the Doctor Who Adventures website● Maintaining and improving relationships with external contacts, in particular the brand team at BBC Wales, the creative development team at BBC Worldwide and the external PR team.● Attending functions and events on behalf of the magazine, including launches, exhibitions, set visits and press interview days.● In the absence of the Editor, monitoring the editorial content of the magazine to ensure quality, accuracy, consistency of style, and obtaining all necessary approvals from the Editorial Director and Publisher, and the brand teams at BBC Wales and BBC Worldwide● With the editor, flatplanning individual issues then writing the majority of features, commissioning writers where appropriate● Supervising the work of staff and freelance writers to ensure high quality, relevance to the reader, and brand consistency● Improving working practices by devising and implementing a new electronic picture research system

Design and art direction for Doctor Who titles at BBC Books, including The Brilliant Book 2011 and 2012 and The Doctor - His Lives and Times.

I started this television and popular culture blog because nobody else in the world was writing about the revival of Crossroads that was running on ITV at the time.

Launched Doctor Who Adventures, eventually taking circulation to 204,000. I also designed hundreds of covermounts, including stickers, posters, masks, stationery, toys and packaging. Redesigned Girl Talk magazine and launched All About Animals and Horrible Histories.

I redesigned the Press and Journal in 2002, and helped launch a series of weekly sections – Your Home, Your Car and Your Life. I also worked on the Evening Express and Herald & Post.
