  • Vaalco
New Ventures Manager / Business Development Reservoir Engineer / Field Development Coordinator
    Vaalco May 2015 - Sep 2019
    Houston, Tx, Us
    * Analyzed numerous M&A candidates from both technical and economic perspectives. Presented findings to board and C Suite. Acquired additional equity, divested a small non-strategic asset. * Planned and coordinated a Value of Information workshop to derive the value of performing seismic over the Gabonese assets. The survey was approved.* Planned and coordinated a Strategic Field Development Framing Workshop to help focus on optimal future development options for the Etame field. * Wrote a Request for Information document that explained all the issues facing the asset, and sent to tendering companies to help them develop proposals for consideration (see above).* Created a Field Development Plan for the Equatorial Guinea asset. Coordinated input from Facilities, Drilling, G&G, etc. Derived all production profiles for various scenarios. Completed all economic runs. Created cumulative probability/value curves. As VAALCO is a small company with limited software applications all this was done in Excel. Consolidated with accounting to help with decisions regarding portfolio.* Solely created investor presentation for Equatorial Guinea asset, presented to potential development partners.* Built a Monte Carlo model in an Excel Spreadsheet to determine the potential range of NPV values to enter an area with very limited technical data.* Helped with input to investor presentations for current producing assets .* Convinced one skeptical manager to allow me to use a process I had developed to frame options, and used it regarding a corroding subsea export line. We had captured all the knowns, uncertainties, alternatives, risks, consequences, created mitigation plans and action items with completion date, all on one document. The manager admitted it had saved time, clarified the situation and was transparent to all the team involved. The board decided the team was no longer needed. I had two job offers in international companies before the pandemic saw them both withdrawn
  • Statoil
    Eagle Ford Subsurface Manager
    Statoil Jul 2011 - Aug 2014
    Stavanger, Rogaland, No
Built a team of G&G, reservoir & production engineers (from 4 to 18 professionals) to develop the Eagle Ford asset. Managed both short and long term planning and forecasting. Created team structure and strategy, built competencies, ensured internal interfaces were strong & effective. Measurably improved the original development profile by adding infill wells. Worked with drilling group to change completions design thus improving EUR and economics by a considerable amount (25% increment). Made contact with competitors to share information and learning so as to accelerate our development plans. Mentored younger team members in both technical and soft skills.* By increasing well count and discussing development techniques with competitors, increased NPV by some $400MM* Derived a workflow and created a template with all inputs for well planning. The template was used to track progress and allowed all stakeholders to see at a glance how any plans were progressing. This allowed us to rapidly chase up laggards or switch wells in the program. Estimated to improved efficiency by some 30%.* Had 5 wells designed ahead on the rig at any time* Created and held an introduction to Petroleum Economic course * Built a close working relationship with my counterpart in the JV. This resulted in a far closer relationship with team members during both partner meetings or for information requests etc.* Assisted and advised the specialist networks to ensure learnings were shared amongst all assets* Accountable for all team assessments, training and development plans. Held regular meetings to discuss progress. The Statoil system included upward feedback, so my own performance was partly decided by my team. Left as I was not going to move my family to Austin. I had a job offer as a Production Manager, the oil crash saw the position withdrawn.
  • Schlumberger
Consulting Manager, Ne Basin Usa - North America Consulting Manager
    Schlumberger Mar 2009 - Jul 2011
    Houston, Texas, Us
Moved to Pittsburgh integrating a remote consulting office into the larger Schlumberger culture, e.g. well services, well logging, due to the growth of the Marcellus shale. Developed and enacted medium term plans, added a Data Services (log analyst) function, and brought in more operationally focused skills such as well placement and completion expertise to complement our already strong sub-surface skills. Strengthened both the P&L and business focus for the team. Designed and delivered presentations to clients (technical to executive level) to attract work, then communicated objectives to the technical group to ensure completion. The key is to understand the client needs so that a solution can be designed that satisfies it. Sometimes the client is not aware that there is a need or that a solution exists.* During this tenure also acted as North America Consulting Manger. Created tools to help understand gaps in competencies and use these to understand how performance could be improved * Made improvements to the Pittsburgh's team's understanding of company policies due to an upcoming audit. The VP Consulting praised me for these efforts as the team passed the audit.Due to the rise of unconventional development, was headhunted. Was offered to speak to various major companies, Statoil seemed to be the best fit. Basically, an offer I couldn't refuse
  • Schlumberger
Principal Reservoir Engineer / Project Coordinator
    Schlumberger May 2007 - Mar 2009
    Houston, Texas, Us
Visited potential clients to discuss the risk/reward model and then evaluated project potential (technical and cash flow risks) before recommending to executive level whether to proceed or not. Worked closely with BD Manager to grow the business. During this time managed to convince senior management to hold a strategy workshop to identify how we may help the business segment have a stronger understanding of our core competencies to improve project success. Built and managed a remote sub-surface team to evaluate a steam flood opportunity in Canada.* Built a screening tool that helped to rapidly evaluate potential projects. This tool took our general business model, but allowed easy manipulation (WI percentages, time of involvement etc). This allowed us to screen a potential project in 2 to 5 days. This was considerably faster than the previous assessment process which involved building bespoke models, and took anywhere between 20-30 days. * Built a tool that randomly selected well profiles from an area of interest. By creating a drilling program (number of rigs, time between spud to spud etc) a probabilistic profile of scenarios was created. These were input to the screening tool to help with evaluations* Audited a Schlumberger operated field on behalf of the owner to ensure processes were being adhered to and opportunities were being properly evaluated. Learned enough about the operation that I went back later to improve a workflow (below)* The owner was asking us to develop faster. I visited the asset to determine the current state of the information workflow, from field to user. Once understood I created a different way of recording and sending information so that the user had the data in 50% of the time. In essence this was achieved without changing any of the system hardware or software.* Whilst doing the above also recorded various issues with instruments recording incorrect information and hazardous safety issues in the field for correction.
  • Schlumberger
Senior Solutions Engineer - Real Time Workflow Design And Execution
    Schlumberger Apr 2003 - May 2007
    Houston, Texas, Us
This was a very interesting position and something I have become very passionate about. I was developing real time workflows and strategies to create commercial applications for Schlumberger that would meet the business needs of customers producing assets. Was awarded one patent for designing a tool to identify current and future state of a workflow and the potential gaps that needed to be eliminated or improved. Worked very closely with the end users to guide and influence them to adopt the new processes as part of the change management program. As a joint venture with a major operating company, I would honestly say that at the end of this project our understanding of real time workflows (or Digital Oilfield) was one of the most advanced in the industry at that time.* The workflows followed a simple "Surveillance (see it)", "Analysis (understand the issue and how to remediate)" and "Decision" philosophy. The objective was to allow faster and better decision making.* Created alarms that allowed users to work by exception* Alarms were generated by percentage difference, defined amount or following a statistical analysis off a data trend* Added a Watch list to allow the user to "park" a potential issue for reminder at a later date* Automated KPI's in real time* Helped create a Waterflood Workflow for testing in the Analysis stage of the project* Documented all learnings and wrote a use case to better understand the philosophy of the project* Wrote user instructions for the surveillance screens* "Wired up" one of my old classical reservoir engineering spreadsheets (fractional flow analysis) to the real time data. An optimization engine was included to quickly estimate reservoir parameters subject to certain constraints. This was used to demonstrate the feasibility of automating analytical work and using the information to make faster decisions.
  • Schlumberger
Senior Reservoir Engineer / Team Lead
    Schlumberger Feb 2001 - Apr 2003
    Houston, Texas, Us
Lead reservoir engineer for first North Sea field rejuvenation project. Performed all PVT, SCAL, Simulation. Team lead for numerous reservoir studies, including gas field development and many waterflood studies. Performed advanced studies using the Eclipse simulator. Used Prosper for single well studies, MBAL and GAP as needed. OFM used to quicker well performance analysis.* Worked very closely with the Aberdeen Risk/Reward group. Went to visit potential clients to present Field Development options where Schlumberger would take some risk.* Helped Intelligent Completion sales teams achieve 100% of their targets. Modeled the impact of accelerating reserves by implementing an IC, then presented to clients. Showed basic NPV's of results, showing benefits far outweighed the costs of the device.PRIOR EXPERIENCE: UK (Aberdeen) and Australia (Perth)Reservoir Engineering: * As part of due diligence I re-arranged the scheduling of future drilling targets and increased the reserves by 1 mmbbls whilst reducing the number of planned wells by 2. This saved $50MM (money of the day). * Created numerous spreadsheets to help analyze reservoir performance and/or make future forecasts. These included P/Z and Havlena-Odeh, Fractional Flow Curve matching, Stiles and Dykstra-Parsons, Pressure Transient Analysis and Profile Generation for Field Development Planning.* In the non-op position regularly contacted partners to negotiate voting that was in line with our viewpoints.Production Engineering: * Wrote procedures to facilitate offshore Scale Squeeze programs. * Built numerous Nodal Analysis models and connected them to Network Models to optimize well performance (ESP and Gas Lift).* Worked on numerous M&A projects to understand reserves, future rates and economic value. As part of my initial training, worked offshore on a North Sea Production Platform. This has proved very valuable in my subsequent career, giving me a strong foundation in field operations and facilities.
