My role was to find work providers for the apprentices and monitor their progress. Safety plays a big role in my job as always and during my time here I have passed my CSCS and my site managers safety training scheme. I have also passed an edu care course in child protection awareness and successfully passed a driver awareness course. On finding the work providers it is then my responsibility to carry out a placement suitability assessment to ensure the safety of the trainees. Once the trainee is placed within a company, regular visits are carried out on site to review progress, health and safety. My role also involves attending local careers fairs to advise local school leavers of career options.

    Process Operator
    Air Products Oct 2015 - Jan 2017
    Tees Valley
My day to day work activities consist of the commissioning, running, monitoring and maintenance of a diverse variety of the plants integral components and infrastructure both out in the field and from the control room using the Emerson delta-v distribution control system (DCS). This includes 2 gas turbine generators with water tube heat recovery steam generator units, large water tube auxiliary boiler, steam turbine generator and drag chain and belt feed conveyor systems. The plants utilities consist of nitrogen, oxygen, plant air, instrument air and natural gas. Many types of water are also used during plant operation including boiler feed water, industrial, demineralised and de-ionised all of which we have to analyse, monitor and adjust chemical dosing rates to keep Ph, dissolved oxygen and conductivity levels within a desired specification range. My duties also include writing daily work permits, writing safe working instruction manuals, organising and completing isolations using the lock out tag out system and following process drawings and piping and instrumentation diagrams to fault find, flow check to aid in installation and commissioning of plant. I also use the SAP system to input notifications and malfunction reports when faults are found or improvements could be made on plant so they can be prioritised, planned and rectified effectively and efficiently. From control room operations, general maintenance activities, boiler start-ups and water system analysis to LIN and LOX tanker offloading , Air Products and Chemicals has given me the opportunity to really stretch my mental capability, expand my skill base and gain a great deal of transferable knowledge.

My role is to supervise and control all the movements from a team of 4 locomotive drivers who will move the iron from the blast furnace to the Bos Plant where the iron is processed into steel. This involves a lot of SPC Graphs, computer input and control, control of TCS charts, monitoring and alarm control. We have fire alarms which are controlled by external brigade. We have gas alarms to control if they are sounded they are checked out by gas safety officers or if out of hours they are checked out by ourselves using breathing apparatus if needed. We have an energy recovery turbine to monitor and if any problems we have an ESD shutdown. If we need to take the furnace off line it has to be taken off in a controlled manner as to not inflict any more damage.
