I received training in the UK in volunteer management. I was also the co-ordinator of Gay Information Cork (gay helpline) which entails volunteer management skills, providing volunteer training and support as well as writing up quarterly statistical reports on call volume. I also devised and designed a new multimedia approach to sexual health promotion for gay pubs and clubs that overcomes information over familiarity and media blindness. I was one of the driving forces of the LGBT Network. Through the Network I presented my idea for a national LGBT helpline. After getting the go ahead to pursue this I travelled to Galway, Dublin and Cork consulting with all the existing LGBT helplines in Ireland, hoping that they will be part of this new and exciting project. This was extremely successful, with complete buy in from all groups as well as receiving €262,000 in funding to develop this project. Before I left Ireland, we hired someone to take this project forward. The National LGBT Helpline is now up and running. For my work in the gay community in Ireland, I was short listed and nominated by public vote for ‘Person of the Year 2009’ at the first ever GALA’s (Gay and Lesbian awards). Show less
