Director Of It And CommunicationsFair WaysLondon, Gb -
Director Of It & CommunicationsFair Ways Community Benefit Society Sep 2021 - PresentLondon And PortsmouthIn 2021, Fairways Care (UK) Ltd reregistered as Fair Ways Community Benefit Society (CBS). Its highly unusual for an organisation to voluntarily move from a PLC to Charity status effectively wiping out shareholder value. In fact this was a defensive move to shield against the many suitors seeking to acquire the company. Its also a recognition that, in a healthcare business, especially one whose surpluses are driven entirely by state funding, the for profit model in its current formats, may not be the ideal. As a charity, without shareholders, or the requirement for dividends, or investors seeking short term returns, or financial structuring to maximise debt, funds provided for those in care are used primarily for those in care and not for financial returns. Otherwise its the young person in care that funds the investors, at the expense of appropriate staffing levels, treatments, therapies, and supports. And society i.e. us, pays the price in a multitude of ways, that ultimately degrades all our lives. All businesses must make a profit ( or surpluses) to thrive and grow, and of course investors are entitled to returns on capital risked, but the balance has swung too far in favour of financial returns and away from true high quality care practice and reinvestment that genuinely makes a difference. In an organisation whose vision foresees and plans for a entity that will be crucial long after those in role today have gone there exists time to truly embed values, plan and invest for the longer term and understand the challenge of breaking the generational cycle of those coming into care. A genuine model of public and private partnership working in unison for a compelling vision and a worthy goal.
