Head of a team of technical architects responsible for the product retrieval capability of Thomson Reuters next-generation Content Platform. Includes responsibilities from previous role (intraday, interday Time Series & Tick History infrastructure), with numerous additional responsibilities (e.g. Analytics Data Cloud, Eikon Search). Main focus was on simplifying, modernising and platformising product access to Thomson Reuters content for the entire Financial and Risk product suite (Eikon, Elektron, Datascope, Knowledge Direct, etc.).Was accountable for design of APIs, database, messaging, web service infrastructure and applications (comprising 150 independent production components) developed and maintained by 200+ software engineers.Major achievements included:- Ground-up re-write of Thomson Reuters Tick History, live within 2 years, and all (several thousand) customers migrated within 18 months of go-live. Decommission of previous infrastructure with 3rd party generated >$15m pa of savings- Laid foundations for on-premise, Cloudera-based non-real-time data platform, and delivered Company Fundamentals and Deals datasets for Eikon, company flagship product- Laid foundations for Elektron Data Platform, company future public cloud-based feeds platform- Enabled vast increase in use of Analytics Data Cloud across Eikon, stabilised service levels (after very unstable start), on-boarded new datasets, increased analytics features, enabled major customer sales

Head of a team of technical architects tasked with re-designing Thomson Reuters historical data stores, distribution & caching infrastructure and client APIs. Databases include intraday & interday Time Series and Tick History, which feed from the Elektron real time network and provide all historical price content to Eikon, company flagship product. Initially a classic poisoned chalice role, and inherited an infrastructure and application that:- Had the worst service record of all critical infrastructures- Had the most customer complaints regarding poor & unstable query performance- Did not scale cost-effectively for ingest, storage volume or query- Cost millions of dollars to build initially and had gained a 'white elephant’ reputation- Was built solely on proprietary technologies, with a support bill of a few million dollars p/a- Was embroiled in politicsTook ownership of technology strategy, and within 3 years refreshed stack top-to-bottom. Achievements:- Improved data retrieval performance by 10-100x (dep. on use-case)- Reversed service record, (~50 major incidents p/a -> ~3)- Reduced supplier support bill (~$3m p/a -> $500k)- Increased database capacity at much lower cost per TB of storage- Quintupled ingest capacity at much lower cost per market tick- Modernised infrastructure h/w and s/w stack with wide use of open-source, whilst simplifying s/w stack, allowing for increased component re-use- Introduced transparent and collaborative culture between architecture/design function and stakeholders, removed barriers and fostered collaboration with similar functions across the business- Developed and promoted opportunities for top talent in the team

Provided project definition, requirements, leadership and direction to Thomson Reuters real-time development teams on delivery of large infrastructure projects. Major achievements included execution and build-out of Elektron Real Time, Thomson Reuters strategic real-time financial market data delivery network.

Led medium-sized onshore and two offshore teams working on multiple high throughput / low latency real-time systems critical to Thomson Reuters global data feed (RDF, RDF+, Elektron) and desktop (Eikon, 3000 Xtra) businesses. Role included staff management responsibilities.Major achievements included implementation of breakthrough performance in real-time data traffic management, allowing the company to manage network/bandwidth costs more effectively than expected, saving multi million $ pa.

Led offshore team and revolutionised capture and analyse Thomson Reuters real-time financial market data, from VMS onto modern technologies. Defined software requirements and remotely managed development team in Beijing, China.

Performed a number of roles during two year Technical Graduate Programme including: Software Developer, Project Manager, Financial Analyst and Infrastructure Service Management Analyst.

Taught English using TEFL methodology to Chinese adults and children. Promoted to Senior Teacher after six months, which involved training and mentoring new teachers.
