I enjoy most technical aspects of material processing and characterization, except for the fact that it's gotta be done indoors. My interests are broad but I still find myself enjoying what in my opinion is a fundamental of metallurgy... melting stuff, breaking stuff, and playing with shiny things. What I really like about metallurgy is the range of understanding involved, from sub-atomic interactions to factors governing the formation of microstructure, out to the macro world of melting, breaking, and shiny things. This macro world example brings me to one of my core philosophies. I truly believe that one that understands a complex thought or system should be able to break it down into simple parts that will be grasped by anyone interested enough to listen and think about the full explanation. Needless to say, I really enjoyed my time explaining physics to students in the EMU physics reading room. I also don't believe that we should leave materials science at work. I'm about to start on a railing project at my house in which I will be experimenting with some pretty wild patinas as well as hopefully, getting my pottery wheel and kiln going.
