Sena has two main functions. The first is to grant licences on behalf of the rightholders to companies or organisations that use music, and to collect the associated fees. Sena carefully monitors and registers where, how and with what purpose music is played in the commercial sector, and which licences are applicable. Sena’s second job is to ensure that the fees are correctly distributed among the artists and producers. To make this possible, Sena first registers rightholders’ details, including the repertoire they have worked on or produced.Music knows no bounds – literally or figuratively. Fortunately, most European countries have legislation similar to that in the Netherlands, and as a creator of music you have the right to payment if your music is played in other countries. At the same time, it is practically impossible as an artist to register directly with every foreign organisation and submit your entire repertoire each time. To make things more efficient and effective for everybody, Sena has concluded bilateral agreements with numerous organisations. These agreements mean that as a creator of music, you only need to register with Sena and you will still receive payments for music use in other countries.Besides Artists, Independent producers who have released their repertoire in other countries (either themselves or via third parties) can grant Sena a mandate to collect the fees for neighbouring rights abroad.
