As of September 30, 2020, I have been employed by Cabell Huntington Hospital and Mountain Health Network for a total of 35 years. I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to practice a profession I really enjoy with the support of excellent organizations and their leadership and staff. As of March 15, 2019, I am now Vice President and General Counsel at Mountain Health Network, Inc., with responsibility for directing all legal, insurance, risk management and related affairs of the healthcare system comprised of Cabell Huntington Hospital, Inc., and St. Mary's Medical Center, Inc., in Huntington WV. I am a past president of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management. I have earned designations as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management. I am also a member of the American Health Lawyers Association with over 36 years experience as a practicing attorney as well as over 33 years in healthcare risk management.September 25, 2020 - Dan Groszkruger and I just completed our 12th presentation of the "Legislative and Regulatory Update" for the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management. Due to COVID-19, we had to record it for future viewing/listening. We really hope we will be able to present this in person next year at the Annual Conference!April 21, 2022 - Mountain Health Network is pleased to announce Paul English Smith, Vice President and General Counsel, has been honored by the West Virginia Bar Foundation Board of Directors as a 2022 Bar Foundation Fellow. The Foundation Fellows program recognizes lawyers and judges in West Virginia who have shown exemplary dedication to the practice of law in their communities through their professional and personal efforts.Fellows are selected by the West Virginia Bar Foundation Board of Directors, which comprises statewide judges and lawyers with diverse legal backgrounds. Smith and 18 other individuals join the 24th class of Bar Foundation Fellows and will be honored on April 21, at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Charleston. Approximately 450 out of 6,000 West Virginia lawyers and judges have been selected as Foundation Fellows since 1999.
