I wanted to set up a campaign group led by local people with learning disabilities to challengesocieties misconceptions and make positive changes in the Doncaster area.We meet up regularly to talk about campaign work that we can do to make changes. Our membersare given tasks to carry out and have support from their staff if they require it.Our current campaign doesn't just affect people with a learning disability, it affects people withphysical disabilities, children, pensioners, hearing and sight impairments and indeed the generalpublic. We have a twitter page and which you can follow us and you can check in on our progress sofar @donvoice4change the issues we campaign on the effect a wide variety of people from young to old.1 in 60 people has a learning disability and faces discrimination in many areas of their lives. Weare looking to change this.To carry out objectives, my team worked together and contributes their skills to get it done andasked for help from police and the council because we felt we needed their input. When we wereplanning on carrying out the plan, we considered how this will affect others such as the people wesupport, the community and Mencap. I’d delegated responsibilities and made sure that the teammember I'd assigned to the task can do it and willing to get it done. Doing this can make the teamfeel motivated and part of the team. When assigning job roles within the team it's important totake their strengths and weaknesses into consideration. If my team doesn't feel like I trust them, they may perform poorly with the tasks I've given them, feel less confident in their jobs or noteven attempt to accomplish their roles because they feel they will be criticised or know that thetasks will be taken off them. I made sure that if I ask one of my team members to undertake atask, they are progressing ok with it and complete it.

  • Mencap
    Support Worker
    Mencap Apr 2014 - Mar 2016
    Doncaster, United Kingdom
I encourage the people I supported to learn a variety of life skills. This includes: encouraging them to look after their homes, promote personal hygiene, promoting continence and management of incontinence while maintaining dignity and respect, encouraging a good health and fitness regime, supporting them to learn social skills, support them to understand the importance of safety at home and in the community, advised and encouraged the idea of working either full or part time, advised them how to travel safely while encouraging them to be as independent as possible, helping the people I support to manage anxiety to reduce instances of challenging behaviour and listening to the people I support to ensure they receive their support in a personal centred way.I work as part of an in-house team which involves helping and encouraging each other. There is more documentation and reporting information in a way that helps the people I work with and I am now a key worker to one of the tenants that I support. Over the years, I have witnessed discrimination and I've been encourage to challenge wrong ways of thinking about learning disabilities. I have been encouraged to be brave and develop new ideas which are now in effect where I work.
