For over twenty years I have been on the forefront on solving the most complex problems in the world's most dangerous places. From leading small Special Forces teams in Afghanistan to leading the first Special Forces Battalion in the Counter-ISIS campaign in Syria, I have learned the art of delivering creative, unconventional problem solving in high pressure, high risk, multi-national environments. I have never found a language, cultural, national, ethnic, or socio-economic barrier that can't be broken down or breached with humor. My father, a 30 year educator, was best known for his loud, infectious laugh - he was a sucker for "the funny" - and I grew up appreciating the value and utility of making people laugh.Fast forward to a career in Special Forces (The Green Berets) and believe it or not, my genuine love of making people laugh was probably more instrumental than my ability to shoot, move or communicate on the battlefield. In every high stake, high risk situation I encountered, humor carried the day. I've used my ability to connect with people to build experience and expertise in:Leading small, cross-functional teams in hostile and austere environmentsLeading large, multi-national teams in complex domains. Delivering results by empowering the success of others Project management at scale in the most high pressure, high risk environments in the worldBuilding innovative organizational cultures focused on the value of investing in peopleI love to connect with people who are dedicated to enabling the success of others, especially when they are from backgrounds diverse from my own.Contact me at paul.toolan@gmail.comTo explore potential areas where I can provide value, schedule a meeting at the Calendly link below:

Co-Host / Co-CreatorBest Pandemic Ever Podcast Mar 2020 - PresentThere's no such thing as a "good" pandemic. However, COVID-19 has brought our world to a stand-still, requiring us to rethink our systems, question our daily actions, and reassert what our shared values actually are. This is what makes our current situation a real opportunity to challenge old ideas, ask long overdue questions, and discuss new ideas for how we create the future. Join Jared Nichols and Paul Toolan as they share practical (and sometimes idiotic) ways to take a more active role in shaping the post-pandemic future. -

Battalion Commander (Chief Executive Officer Of A Medium Sized Company)5Th Special Forces Group (Airborne) - Us Army Apr 2016 - Oct 2017Commanding a Special Forces Battalion is a difficult role to explain for fellow service members, but even more difficult to explain to someone who never spent a day in uniform. To put it in the simplest terms, I was responsible for 21 teams of Green Berets who could accomplish the impossible, in the most inhospitable and inaccessible places in the world, against insurmountable odds, alone and unafraid, where every decision and action has life and death consequences. As an example, in 2016 I deployed the battalion to Syria, established a headquarters just nine miles from ISIS front lines, and led five teams of Green Berets in the development of a program to train and equip a combined Kurdish/Arab counter-ISIS force. Due to the creativity, fitness, skill and expertise of those teams, we increased the output from 200 soldiers per month to over 2000 soldiers a month in less than 120 days, and liberated the ISIS stronghold of Manbij, Syria. -
