This database is integrated into the department’s cloud file sharing service and is the first port of call when approached by companies looking for collaboration or research teams in need of external industry funding. Increasing links with industry and the subsequent impact in that sector is a major factor in the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Thus, as this database will increase the utilisation of industry links, it will help boost the funding gained by the department through the REF. The database also analyses the financial data of current and previous projects. It subsequently produces reports, figures and projections of funding allocations and their trends. Show less

I was asked to return to Sellafield Ltd in the summer of 2014 by my previous manager following the success of my previous internship and worked alongside chartered nuclear engineers in Spent Fuel Management. I produced mathematical calculations for storing spent nuclear fuel in high pH ponds as part of a technological feasibility study and technical drawings for the safe disposal of high-activity liquor used to brief the NDA. I produced mathematical calculations for storing spent nuclear fuel in high pH ponds as part of a technological feasibility study and technical drawings for the safe disposal of high-activity liquor used to brief the NDA. I also produced documents regarding radiochemical analysis and potential profit streams for precious metal extraction. These documents were sent to the senior management of programmes and strategies for further investigation and possible project creation. As a consequence of my work, the project to store the spent fuel at a higher pH was approved by the technology review board and the radiochemical analysis is being used on site for isotope identification. I completed a Nuffield Science Project on the de-conversion of legacy uranium hexafluoride into a safe uranium oxide and containment of its waste streams. The documents I produced during my time at Capenhurst are given to all new engineering staff and contractors as required reading on this project. As a result, I was awarded the CREST gold award by the British Science Association.
