I am a Consulting Partner of FB Rice in the Sydney-based Chemistry team. As a qualified Australian and New Zealand patent attorney, I have a distinguished more than 35 year career with the firm. As a former managing partner of FB Rice and previous head of our Life Sciences practice group, my experience is strongly business focussed.Leveraging my experience, I use my knowledge and skills to strategically assist FB Rice’s clients to secure and enforce their intellectual property rights.By practicing in all areas of intellectual property, I have gained substantial insights into the problems faced by our clients and more importantly, approaches and solutions to those problems. Key areas of practice include:• prosecution of applications before the Australian Patent Office and the Intellectual Property Office on New Zealand as well as throughout South East Asia;• patent oppositions;• patent re-examinations;• freedom to operate opinions;• IP aspects of commercial and strategic advice;• patent litigation support;• reviewing and drafting patent applications.With a strong commercial focus, I aim to provide our clients with successful IP outcomes that are aligned with their business. Often times this necessitates navigating our clients through complex, multi-jurisdictional situations in order to secure the best solution.By virtue of initial experience gained in pharmaceutical R&D, my clients include domestic and multinational human and animal pharmaceutical businesses. Additionally I practice more broadly in herbicides; inorganic materials, including catalysts and alloys; polymers, including surface coatings and rubber technologies; and clean and green technologies.I regularly author opinion-based articles on a range of IP subjects. These include subjects such as obtaining patent term extension rights for complex products through to how to efficiently prosecute patent applications in Malaysia. In a very strong opinion published on the topic of exhaustion of patent rights in the context of a right to repair, the High Court of Australia agreed with our opinion and struck down a century-old precedent.As a result of my experience in dealing with the complex area of patent term extensions, I co-authored the Australian chapter of the highly regarded 2015 NOMOS publication: Ergänzende Schutzzertifikate - Patent Term Extensions (ed. Arne Markgraf).I am ready to offer my thorough knowledge of IP to assist inventors and businesses to obtain the best outcome from assessing and protecting potential inventions through to enforcement and commercialization.
