Sibelco's Magnesia Operation In Rockhampton Queensland is one of the world's largest producers of deadburned, electrofused and calcined magnesia products for the global refractory, chemical, fertiliser, hydromet and feed product markets. The plant has a magnesia production capacity of 300kt per annum (combined total of the various magnesia finished products). The operation includes the;• Mining, pre-concentration and beneficiation process to produce a high quality magnesite at Kunwarara 70km north of Rockhampton, and• The Production facility on the Northern outskirts of Rockhampton where the the thermal processes of calcination, deadburning and electrofusion are undertaken to produce the various magnesia products,In this role I was responsible for the maintenance (routine preventive/predictive, multiple unit shutdowns and optimisation) of the magnesite mine and magnesia plant; inclusive of all fixed and mobile plant, power supply and distribution system. The Maintenance and Engineering Manager has direct reports responsible for maintenance, engineering, projects and procurement. These superintendents in turn manage various teams comprising maintenance leaders, planners, engineers, mechanical and electrical tradespeople, apprentices, and procurement and warehouse officers.
Engineering And Maintenance Manager
The Cement Australia Gladstone facility is the largest cement manufacturing operation in Australia, capable of producing 1.5 million tonnes of cement per annum. This site includes the operation of Queensland’s largest Limestone Mine for the supply of raw materials to the cement manufacturing operation at Fishermans Landing. It has a permanent workforce of 150 plus upwards of 50 contractors with the majority of cement and clinker being shipped from the wharf facility at Fishermans Landing to major terminals in Townsville, Glebe in Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and Bulwer Island in Brisbane.In this role I was responsible for the maintenance (routine preventive/predictive, annual shutdown and optimisation) of the limestone mine and cement plant; inclusive of all fixed and mobile plant, power supply and distribution system. The Maintenance Manager had direct reports of, four separate maintenance discipline managers which in turn managed various teams comprising maintenance leaders, planners, engineers, inspectors, mechanical and electrical tradespeople, and apprentices.

The Rockhampton operation was a 100kt facility producing specialty off white (Ivory) cement for the construction industry. It employed 34 technical and skilled operators at a site in Parkhurst, North Rockhampton. The plant was shut down and mothballed in November 2009 as a direct result of the impact of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and spiraling logistics costs.Responsible for operation, maintenance, capital improvement, cost control and ensuring the regulatory standards for safety, health, environment and product quality standards were achieved. The Site Manager had direct reports of a production and maintenance manager, a technical manager and a mechanical engineer. These roles in turn had various reports of laboratory technicians, administration staff, shift process operators, trades people and despatch operators.

Kandos was a 450kt per annum cement manufacturing facility located in the Central Tablelands of NSW. The site includes a limestone mine and 5km aerial ropeway for the supply of raw materials to the cement manufacturing facility located in the town of Kandos. At the time it employed 130 employees. Cement was despatched from this facility to markets in western Sydney and central western NSW.In this role is was responsible for the maintenance (routine preventive/predictive, annual shutdown and optimisation) of the limestone mine and cement plant; inclusive of all fixed and mobile plant, power supply and distribution system, company dam and pipeline, etc. The Maintenance Manager had direct reports of, three maintenance leaders (one electrical and two mechanical), two planners (one maintenance and one shutdown) and two engineers (one mechanical and one electrical) and indirectly through the leaders; twelve mechanical tradespeople, four electrical tradespeople, eight apprentices and two skilled non tradespeople.

At the conclusion of this training, I returned to Kandos to lead a team of 8 people to identify and plan waste reduction projects for the Kandos plant. This process was then undertaken at the Railton Cement Plant in Tasmania and the Marketing/Depots/Transport sector of the business at Clyde in Sydney. During the various phases I was responsible for the functions of:• Training people in the McKinsey methods.• Leading the Kandos BIP project.• Navigating the Railton BIP project.• Navigating the Marketing/Depots/Transport BIP project.
