I’m a highly experienced professional operating within higher education research, impact and knowledge exchange, and place-based settings. My background is rooted in strategic and thematic development, place-shaping, business-partnering, impact, building, drafting and submission of larger, complex and team bids across disciplines for external funding, business planning and portfolio management, public engagement with research, funding bodies, and the building and growth of relationships with local, regional, national and international partners for the purposes of social change. Social change is very important to me. I’m interested in opportunities which span beyond purely grant funding and submissions. My journey has included co-developing world leading research and knowledge exchange applications for funding across six different UK universities over two decades in the Midlands, South West, South East and London. I was one of the original board members of the highly successful Torbay Culture partnership in South Devon, acting as it’s Chair 2015-19. Torbay Culture as a place-based partnership has played a key role in putting arts, culture and social wellbeing at the heart of Torbay’s regeneration as somewhere to invest and live. I’ve also had a long-term relationship with the Association of Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA). Since 2014, I have acted as a qualifications assessor, mentor, and help internally verify our qualifications framework to develop and accredit people working in our profession. Now living in the beautiful North Cotswolds, I’m moving into my second role based at the University of Birmingham, as the Research Strategy & Development Partner for the Arts & Humanities. My mission is to make what we do at the heart of shaping Birmingham’s future and the future of communities all over the UK and worldwide, in line with our origins as a civic institution.I’m keen to discuss new ideas, methods, and experiences. Boards and volunteering opportunities are of interest. I’m also interested in fresh opportunities to help shape places and engagement with communities on what is important to them, and issues relating to enhancing understanding and opportunities for others who are neurodiverse too.

Research Development ManagerLoughborough University Jul 2021 - Jan 2022At Loughborough I developed the research grants portfolio for the School of Social Sciences & Humanities (SSH) working with PVC Lisanne Gibson and ADR Steve Rice whilst covering for the substantive post holder who was on secondment. Outcomes included preparations for attaining the ESRC Centre for Early Mathematics Learning (PI Gilmore with Co-Directors from L’boro, York and Co-Is at Oxford and Bristol), capture of an AHRC/BBC 100 Fellowship (PI Collins) on the social legacy of 1960s television content, and NEZMIL, an ESRC New Investigator Grant award (PI Depledge) analysing how the UK could achieve its security and defence strategic goals whilst meeting in parallel the commitment to net zero by 2050. Strategically, I worked closely with Professor Emily Keightley on the CALIBRE research theme ‘Media, Memory & History (MMH). MMH acted as a safe space to provide cohort and networking opportunities for colleagues at different career stages whose research was mapped as being within the MMH theme. -
Cluster Lead & Senior Research Development Manager For The Social SciencesUniversity Of Exeter Jul 2017 - Jan 2021TbcI was leading a team of 20-25 people (varying according to projects starting and ending) through multiple rounds of organisational change; Development and Management of large projects e.g. Research Centres; Budget Management; running Funder Advisory Networks for coaching and skills development of academic/PS colleagues; Horizon-scanning and internal/external relationship manager. I wrote a business case based on a survey co-designed with PI Playford to achieve an ESRC Safepod (super computer at the St Luke’s campus) for Exeter and Plymouth researchers to be accessing large governmental and public datasets, becoming a REF environment staple. I then worked closely with UoE Estates, Libraries and many other teams to see the Pod through to build and installation stages. -
Assistant College Manager (Research)University Of Exeter May 2016 - Jun 2017University Of Exeter Business SchoolSecondment role as Head of the Research Professional Services in the Business School. I ran until summer 2017 a talented and hard-working department of 12. I worked alongside the Exec PVC, Associate Dean of Research and School Director of Operations to implement and deliver the new School strategy of which research was a huge part. A 3 year operational plan for the School, including research, was developed by the team heads in autumn 2016.One particularly notable success for our team was the School being re-accredited for EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) in December 2016. The University was awarded accreditation for five years, one of only 15 institutions within the UK to have gained this level of endorsement. An international review team visited in September 2016 to interview students, staff and partners of the School, following which a jury of experts then awarded the accreditation. Prof Tim Coles as Associate Dean of Research and myself led Chapter 5 of the School self-assessment report on research, which included a panel interview during the EQUIS visit of September 2016. Another key outcome was being a core member of Professor Sally Barnes’s bid-writing team for the successful renewal of the ESRC South West Doctoral Training Partnership between the Universities of Bristol, Bath, Exeter, UWE and Plymouth. Other key duties included:- Part of School PSSMT (Professional Services Senior Management Team), Research Services Team Heads Group and Research Services Project Group, amongst others- Direct line management of 2 team members and oversight of 12 in total- Approver of all research proposals, consultancy activity and expenditure on projects and School Research Clusters- Oversight of School PGR Team and working closely with the academic PGR Director and Doctoral College- Oversight of the impact case studies portfolio for the Business School- Oversight of School post-award team and working closely with School Finance team and Head of Finance -
Research Development ManagerUniversity Of Exeter Oct 2010 - Apr 2016Innovation CentreI joined Exeter October 2010 working with the University's Social Science community as a business partner across five academic Colleges. I was member of the Research Strategy Group for different Colleges including Exeter Business School and College of Social Sciences & International Studies (SSIS). I was member of the SSIS Research & Commercial Planning Group. I worked with the College Research & Finance Teams advising on their business planning cycle and also in partnership with two of the Theme Leaders (Global Uncertainties & Societal & Lifestyle Shifts) in developing the University's Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS) Strategy.I worked with academic staff one-to-one and in teams to develop projects of different sizes and disciplines although these tended to be larger and more complex in scope with multiple external partners. This resulted in grant award success with the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Economic & Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC) and Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). I was Exeter's Relationship Manager for the ESRC 2011 onwards. I responded on behalf of Exeter to various consultations eg Flinders Review on research leadership, demand management, new strategy etc.I advised on all aspects of research and knowledge transfer proposals including methods and design, bid-writing, project management, resources and promoting the impact of academic work by co-writing documents including the-then Pathways to Impact section.Institutional-level outcomes included an RCUK-funded Public Engagement with Research Centre (the Exeter Catalyst) 2012-15 (PI DVC Talbot and Dr Durie as Champion) and an ESRC IAA business plan for an eventual £1.2m which I led on the development and submission of. The former was transformative in my thinking in establishing the principles of conducting and co-creating with and not to or on communities. It directly led on to a huge transformative opportunity to be Chair of Torbay Culture. -
Research Development OfficerUniversity Of Westminster Sep 2009 - Oct 2010I joined University of Westminster's (UoW) School of Architecture & Built Environment in September 2009 from University of Chichester. My task was to look after the School's research, knowledge transfer and consultancy needs as a portfolio and to double external income in the School, which we were successful with our researchers in delivering. My contribution achieving this by identifying trends and opportunities, engaging individual academic staff and working with them either one-to-one or in small groups, coaching them on how to develop the content and design of their projects. My tailored approach was contingent on the member of staff's needs. I then ensured that submission occurs safely by working with academic staff on key submission milestones and costed and priced the project. Before formal submission, I supervised the internal approval process. If the application was successful, I also carried out a first line overview of the sponsor's contract as part of a traffic light system. I negotiated any first line changes before appropriate referral to senior managers.I worked daily within the School but reported back to UoW's Research & Enterprise Service (RES). I was responsible for reporting upwards on the income generation levels against forecasts and also to the School Research Committee run by the School Research Director and Dean.My intervention led to awards from Joseph Rowntree Foundation (the 'From Park to Club' Project led by PI Marion Roberts in collaboration with University of Newcastle), Economic & Social Research Council, European Commission, International Olympic Committee, Department For Transport and many others. -
Knowledge Exchange Funding Co-OrdinatorUniversity Of Chichester Nov 2006 - Sep 2009I worked across the University of Chichester (UoC) to generate more than £700,000 worth in external grants and contracts funding for knowledge exchange, research and CPD awarded by RCUK, EU, UK government agencies and the independent sector in conjunction with the University's academic staff. In addition, I was part of the bid-writing team for a £7m HEFCE Strategic Development Fund award, and worked with two academic leaders on building the papers which made the core of the case in the lead up to the final bid. These represented a number of firsts for Chichester, including a first major knowledge transfer award in 2007 in the form of an ESRC Impact Grant, led by PI Chris Gaine and in 2009 a first ever Interreg IVA (CAMIS) project for Chichester, led by PI David Cooper. Other awards were recieved as a direct result of my input including the Edumatics Comenius Multilateral Network Project (298k Euros led by UoC's Alison Clark-Wilson) and Trisha Waters' Storylinks project on the Special Educational Needs of children funded by Esmee Fairburn Foundation & TDA.My contribution was to advise on the content creation, writing some of the non-technical sections, work with the Finance Department on costing and pricing and to guide the project through process until it became post-award.I worked alongside Dr Cooper with his paper on employer engagement at the University which formed part of the Unlocking the Potential (UTP) organisational change strategy. I accompanied Dr Cooper on a number of visits to benchmark Universities and made available my experience of the HE sector and my contacts. I also provided advice to Dr Sue Morgan on her report on research as another flank of UTP. The data formed part of the picture leading to the business case for a successful Strategic Development Fund award from HEFCE to regenerate the Bognor Regis campus and establish a Research & Employer Engagement Office. -
Uk Grants Officer/Grants OfficerUniversity Of Portsmouth Jan 2004 - Nov 2006I enjoyed my first role in University Research Administration and Management at University of Portsmouth (UoP) who I joined from HMCE (now HMRC) in January 2004. My role was to identify funding opportunities, to create digests and to disseminate and promote the opportunities to academic staff both in groups and one-to-one. Moreover, I advised both academic and non-academic colleagues on the regulations of sponsors as bids were being created and ensured that all electronic submissions were successful. I represented UoP at external events and networks including SEELOS, ARMA and RCUK to ensure that the most timely and updated advice reached UoP's staff.I took an active part with Research & Knowledge Transfer Service colleagues in designing the Department's staff development programme. My particular unique contribution was the idea of Rainbow Sessions on specific real world topics(Climate Change, Risk Management, Ageing &; Security) where research and knowledge transfer monies were known to be available. In particular, the session on Security attracted more than 40 attendees and was so successful it led to a spin-off speed-dating session and recruitment to new posts. My work with UoP researchers led to numerous awards from sponsors including: Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council, Economic & Social Research Council, Arts & Humanities Research Council, the Eduserv Foundation, Nuffield Foundation and the European Commission.
