All of my life, people have always commented that I am too anal. Because one definition refers to the anus, I decided I needed to find a unique word that could describe being extremely meticulous, neat, careful, or precise. Being an avid reader, I discovered my new word while I was reading the 1965 version of The Count of Monte Cristo, the 1365-page, small typed, narrow margined book was filled with immense detail but also provided me the fabulous substitution word – pedantic – (someone who annoys others by correcting small errors, caring too much about the minor details, or emphasizing their own expertise (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2022)). Now I try not to annoy others, but I definitely meet and exceed the other definition. In the Tumor Registry profession, it is imperative the registrar be pedantic because sometimes the small details are the ones that really make the difference. I also love to share my knowledge, whether training a new employee or standing in front of an audience, sharing the complexity of the registry role in a manner that a layperson can understand. It’s pure enjoyment when I can see their minds grasp and understand the vast responsibilities for keeping current but informing them of the daily obstacles faced and the success, we’ve had in overcoming some of them.Being the sole registrar for the past 11 years, sometimes my mind gets muddled by information and task overload, when this happens all, I have to do is step away, and focus on decluttering and organizing. It doesn’t matter if it’s a desk drawer, a bookshelf, or a filing cabinet, doing this helps me to find clarity again so that I can restart where I left off and know the direction to go to complete the task. Being pedantic is an asset that is closely connected to being organized. I hope you can see because both of these are part of my nature, you can utilize them to make your company excel.
