To get in contact: Saturn.Rose@mines.eduI am an equity-focused higher education and nonprofit professional. With several years of experience in higher education, I have learned to individualize my approach to students and to promote access and reduce barriers to allow education to change lives. I am passionate about mental health promotion and research-based suicide prevention for youth, LGBTQ programming, and ensuring behavioral health and educational equity in high schools and colleges. Recently, I had the chance to influence the daily lives of young people I advised in Front Range Community College’s LGBTQIA2S+ club, who asked that more college faculty and staff ask for and use their correct gender pronouns. Research shows that when trans youth are correctly gendered, their risk of suicide is reduced. Following talks with our Equity Director, I was invited to provide a college-wide professional development session. I gathered and vetted research to produce a thorough, high-quality workshop that improved competencies in asking, sharing, and using gender pronouns. With an intersectional and historical approach, I tied this knowledge to suicide prevention among young people. The training was well-received by 85 staff members, who reported that they would act on the information they learned.
