I have passionately worked in the disability field for around 30 years. I commenced as a support worker while undertaking my Bachelor of Community Welfare and was curious about why some people with disabilities received funding and others receive nothing even for basic needs. I aligned my studies to disability subjects and have been in this field that I love ever since. A position which held great satisfaction for me was as Facilitator of the Flexible Family Support Program from 2000 - working with children with disabilities and their families. I was with this organisation for 13 years. I worked with Mackay & District Spinal Injuries Association for 8 years in various positions including Management. Working for this small community based, member driven organisation allowed me to develop skills in all facets of the service from direct support when needed, staffing, rostering, grant submissions and acquittals, meeting quality standards, fundraising, coordinating, managing, IT and NDIS Support Coordination when NDIS was introduced to Mackay in 2016. These skills are still with me and I’m very grateful. For the last four years, I have been with ATSICHS Mackay Ltd as NDIS (Specialist) Support Coordinator. I am extremely grateful for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture which I am privileged to work within. Also for the learning opportunities of the additional historic and contemporary issues for First Nations People, particularly those with disability. I specialise in support of people with high and complex physical support needs, but also people with less complex needs. I am as passionate today as when I chose this life 30 years ago.
