For five years I was an AP headquarters manager "embedded" in the newsroom of a major customer, blending stellar journalistic skills and standards with a passion for storytelling, respect for readers and deep understanding and appreciation of customers'​ needs. I help this customer, and all customers, get the most out of the AP news report for both short- and long-range needs. The insights I gleaned from the customer and reader perspective helped guide AP journalism worldwide.My initiatives include: -- Customer insight tips for key editors.-- Leadership of a campaign to improve AP headlines.-- The initiation of a morning coverage advisory giving customers an earlier heads-up about coverage plans in text, video and photos.-- The initiation of an advisory of stories that could be particularly buzzy, consumer-friendly, or simply great human interest pieces. -- A decade-plus ago, training for traditional text editors in multimedia, well before it became the norm.Also:-- Daily work with editors worldwide on coverage needs and story quality.-- Periodically serving as the Nerve Center manager on duty to guide and drive our global news report. -- In previous jobs I hired, trained and led AP reporters and editors and led our breaking news and longer-term news coverage on the national and state levels.

-- Worked with AP editors across the U.S. to develop meaningful enterprise journalism and long-term coverage, as well as quick, thorough and strong coverage of breaking news. -- Edited many stories myself, working closely the originating reporters and editors; oversaw the editing of others.-- Hired, trained and managed and led the National Desk staff of editors and editorial assistants. -- Launched an initiative to give National Desk traditional text editors an immersion in photos and video-- Off the job, trained myself in photos and video shooting and editing.

Greater Detroit Area

Serving as the second-in-charge manager in a busy and demanding news state and city, I directed AP coverage of topics ranging from the struggles of Detroit and the woes of the auto industry to the assisted suicides of Dr. Jack Kevorkian to the environmental concerns of the Upper Peninsula. I worked closely with reporters and editors to craft a superior news report, and communicated frequently with customers to ensure we were meeting their needs.
