For the past eight years, Paul Armas has served as the Assistant Vice President for Facilities Operations within Facilities and Campus Operations Division at Brown University. Paul provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight in building cohesive teams to advance the University's Finance and Administration team’s mission to strengthen the university's culture, organizational health, communications, and resiliency. He leads a diverse range of areas, including buildings and grounds, custodial services, engineering, central power plant and utility distribution, university wide fleet management, contractor services, stores, and logistics operations functions.Under Paul's leadership, he oversees a team of 330 union and over 50 non-union, management, and support staff. Together, they are responsible for maintaining 245 campus buildings—totaling approximately 7.5 million gross square feet—and over 155 acres of turf, parking lots, greenery, and walkways across Providence’s historic College Hill and the downtown Knowledge District.During his tenure, Paul has transformed the department's approach from mostly reactive maintenance to a planned, predictive, and preventive maintenance strategy. He has worked closely with various campus stakeholders to fully implement an Integrated Workplace Management System at Brown. This shift has earned accolades from national and local news and trade publications, as well as awards for Innovative and Effective Practices from the higher education facilities trade group, APPA.Since 2010, Paul has played a key role in $2 billion worth of new construction at Brown. He works closely with colleagues in the Planning, Design, and Construction division of Facilities Management, serving as a principal on multiple active projects. These initiatives leverage highly collaborative Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and Design-Build methods, addressing priorities such as decarbonization, campus thermal efficiency, capital utilities infrastructure, and significant building renovations and expansions. Additionally, Paul supports over $100 million annually in infrastructure renewal, partnering with the Office of Sustainability & Resiliency to advance Brown’s goal of achieving Net-Zero Energy by 2040.Paul plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for over 10,700 students, 850 faculty, and 3,500 staff at Brown, supporting world-class research, learning, and engagement. He actively contributes to the Brown University Institutional Master Plan and regularly presents at regional and national conferences.
