It is important to understand the links between the retirement plan, the exit plan, the succession plan and the estate plans, and to ensure that these plans are made in the right order. The retirement plan determines the timing of the exit from management of the current owner/manager and that person’s financial requirements to fund their retirement, whether as a lump sum which can be invested to produce ongoing income and repay personal debt, or as payments from the business (if it remains post retirement). If the exit plan determines that family succession is the most appropriate exit mechanism for the current owner/manager, then you can move to the family business management and equity succession plans. The management succession plan will determine who will take over running the business, which will influence that decision as to which family members should receive equity.
