Paul focused for 43 years on heavy industry engineering, reliability and maintenance. He worked in alumina refining 33 1/2 years, aluminum smelting 4 years, aluminum casting and sheet rolling for 4 1/2 years and steel casting and sheet rolling for 1 year. Held management level positions, since 1990, having served in engineering, maintenance or both. He led maintenance organizations at 2 plants through start-up conditions and into successful operation. Paul worked in union environments all of his career and has participated in union contract negotiations a total of 6 times.
