Central City Sales Hub

Spurred on by something I heard at a sales conference in 2011, I decided to create a networking group for sales professionals in Auckland. The Central City Sales Hub meets monthly to share and learn about best practice in sales. There is nothing more off-putting then pushy sales techniques and I see the Hub as being my opportunity to help raise standards.Members of the group come from a range of different industries but sound sales management, client retention and business development principles are essential to any sales professional. Managing the Hub means that I regularly get the chance to facilitate group work, and help others through coaching and mentoring. I also get to learn from the members themselves.

Jan 2012 - Dec 2014

Contract Services Manager

With a background in sales, I arrived at Frog determined to develop new revenue streams to support business growth. Despite being new to the recruitment industry, I quickly learned about the business and clients and set up a series of ‘candidate talent pools’. These pools of experienced, high-quality contractors helped clients quickly fill gaps in key areas such as marketing, finance and sales under the contracting services offering. Developing this service allowed me to build relationships not just within Frog, but also with candidates. And it gave me the chance to delve into client businesses, helping them overcome resourcing issues that were hitting them hard. As well as contracting services, I found many other ways to use my knowledge of sales strategy and relationship management techniques to develop Frog’s long-term sales plan. I introduced the telecommunications and marine industries to the business, helping them to diversify their client list. But this wasn’t just about clinching an extra set of clients. I first made sure that we all understood these industries so that our services were credible and added value to our clients. Although I am a big fan of face-to-face selling, I became a champion of social media at Frog, using it to expand both client and candidate networks. Social media proved useful not just in maintaining relationships, but also by bringing new clients on-board.

Apr 2011 - Nov 2012

Key Account Strategy

I’ve always been a huge fan of training and development so my role at The Retail Institute was particularly satisfying. Whilst there, I managed client accounts worth over $2m a year, equivalent to 80% of the Institute’s annual revenue. And I had responsibility for an operational budget of $450k.The Retail Institute develops industry standards, training materials and qualifications for the retail and distributions sectors in New Zealand. So my role was to develop long-term relationships with employers, and spot new opportunities to increase the uptake of qualifications. I did this particularly well with Countdown supermarkets. Having secured their support for a Retail Institute Training Programme, I took over 7,000 Countdown employees through the induction process. Within the Institute, I led and motivated a team of five. My passion for leadership and training saw me take a very active role in the Institute’s internal management. And, together with two fellow senior managers, I was instrumental in our successful win of the 2010 JRA Best Small Workplace Award

Nov 2009 - Mar 2011

Group Account Director

As Group Account Director, I managed all the sales functions for this market research business. This comprehensive sales role covered everything from developing the Asia Pacific sales strategy through to negotiating new contracts and improving client retention both in New Zealand and overseas. It involved managing a team of account managers and account executives. For my clients, I was there to assess and help them improve the experience of their customers. So I made sure I learned as much as possible about their businesses to see where improvements could be made. Working with many of New Zealand’s best-known brands, including Foodstuffs, Telecom, Mitre10 and NZ Lotteries, this role gave me a strong network of contacts and great insight into business. I developed a range of initiatives with my clients, including real-time performance measurement, new sales training programmes, and improvements to market intelligence strategies. As a result, I worked with everyone from the c-suite to front-line staff. And successfully negotiated deals valued over $500k. Inside Market Pulse, I sat on the senior management team and took ultimate responsibility for over $2.5m of revenue from New Zealand customers. By carefully managing budgets, processes and people I cut our annual expenses by 30%.
