My practice, in the main, consists of advising:• private clients on their everyday legal issues including conveyancing, family problems, wills and trusts • business clients on commercial issues including contracts, contract interpretation, company structuring and banking and finance matters, and• developer clients on commercial conveyancing and subdivisions. Early on I did a good deal of court work so I’ve seen how transactional documents are dealt with when problems arise. Because I know what intense scrutiny they can come under, I take care to get them right at the outset. My accounting studies helped me to better understand how business operates. This is helpful for commercial work as I’m able to sit at the table with company people and their other advisers and be comfortable with the language. My approach is to listen, understand, consider, and only then give my opinion. Examples of transactions in which I've been involved: • The development of the Viaduct Basin. This included advising on build contracts, leasing, unit titling, and sales for the Sebel Hotel building and The Quays. • Advising on several high profile subdivisions, including Gulf Harbour’s Cap d'Amarres and Matamata’s Eldonwood. • Sales and acquisitions of businesses and their restructuring and refinancing, some particularly complex. My pursuits are now somewhat sedentary – chess and astronomy being two. I retain an interest in the classics and in literature. I also retain an interest in education having been a board member of two large secondary schools and chairman in one case (Carmel College) for several years.I am married to Marie-France, and have two children and five grandchildren.
