Hello. I would like to get one thing straight - I am not distracted.I have watched other business owners chase multiple business ventures at once. I have watched other professors pile into a compact car and race across the US. I have watched other community leaders chase wild and fantastic ideas that could/will revolutionize how we live. In many of these grand distractions, I may have even played a part. However, the path I am on is not about technology or entrepreneurship. It is not about a respected research or teaching career with a strong CV. It is about discovery. Real discovery requires access.I consult in technology and I teach in business because those are the two professions that are granted access to nearly everything. Unlike Snowden, I'm not talking about access to server data. The last thing I want to do is read through old word documents on some server. The real discovery is in a business structure, leadership team, and strategic posturing. So maybe I am not distracted, but definitely self serving? Hardly. This kind of discovery is not about finding things, it is about finding the white space between things. That empty space is what advances in business, employees, and students are made of. For me to stop and fill that space is a distraction to discovery, but to lead others there permanently alters the environment. Their advancement opens the door to my further discovery. For folks I know, I have already spent a lot of time thinking about their business. As for folks I have not met, chances are I have spent much time thinking about their industry. Either way, there is plenty of discovery left and I would be grateful for an opportunity to dive further, to find what doesn't (yet) exist.
