Research: - Virtual testing: Development of material test procedures, analytical and numerical modelsto eliminate expensive coupon level tests for damage and fracture prediction in compositelaminates. The models utilized Schapery theory and crack band modelling to account fordamage and failure respectively. The developed procedure and analysis methods were vali-dated by blind simulation of carbon-epoxy laminates with experiments conducted by sponsors.Sponsor: Boeing Co- Defect mechanics: Development of analytical theory and numerical models to predict compressive failure & delamination of carbon-epoxy and glass-epoxy composites due to manufacturingdefects. Experiments were conducted to estimate material non-linear properties, failure properties and peak- Fracture mechanics: Traditional Grith's energy based fracture mechanics and its validity isexamined from a phenomenological stand point. A new initiation and propagation criterion ishypothesised and analytically implemented to dierent problems.
