I am proud New Leader alum, Cohort 8. I have been in the field of education for the past 16 years. In my current role as Director of Emerging Leaders, I work to manifest the leadership capacity of school leaders who wish to engage in the Data Driven Instructional Cycle to improve achievement outcomes for All students. Additionally, I have been a school Principal for six years in the Oakland Unified School District. While there, I have a demonstrated record of closing the achievement divide for students of color and of poverty. I started my career in education as an urban school teacher where I was instrumental in bringing innovative and college and career going experiences to the entire student body.Educational leadership is at the crux of leading outstanding schools in all neighborhoods.

During this period in my career, I was a teacher in an urban school with 100% free and reduced lunch and all diverse student population. Teaching at Garfield Elementary school was an incredible experience. I loved working with the diverse community, because the students and families were eager to learn, and valued the opportunities they experienced in my class. I treated each student as a genius, and I believed in their capacity to be outstanding scholars. In my class, and in the school, I was able to exciting programs through ingenuity, resourcefulness, and passion. These activities included, Agricultural Day, Cesare Chavez 4 R's Student led expo, Healthy Heart Day, Career Day, and Science Fairs. These experiences were priceless, because of the exposure to linked learning, personalized learning, and project based learning. I left teaching, because I realized that it was critical for me to bring to scale a powerful learning experience for all students. I was accepted into the National New Leaders program, and became an Administrator of Joaquin Miller Elementary School.

I worked in two departments at the Port of Oakland. The first was in thhe Environmental Department under Jim McGrath, and the second was in the Legal Department under David Alexander.
