The most successful lawyers spend less time, energy and money on marketing than the so-called rainmakers. Their secret? They are focused, which, in turn, minimises waste. In marketing, waste is easy.As a marketing specialist for lawyers, I aim to help lawyers and law firms simplify and optimise their marketing efforts. This usually involves focusing on a small number of key strategies and executing them effectively.Marketing is a means to an end rather than a destination. Our two companies, Toro Digital and Pillar & Scroll, cater to law firms' and lawyers' specific marketing needs with this principle in mind.TORO DIGITALI started Toro Digital after a decade of leading national and commercial law firms' marketing and business development (BD) teams. In my experience, marketing and design agencies have failed to understand the unique needs of law firms. Toro Digital was created to bridge that gap.Today, our team consists of 20 professionals dedicated to supporting small and mid-sized law firms. We specialise in generating compelling marketing ideas and implementing them for busy lawyers and operational teams. We also work with legal technology companies, barristers’ lists and chambers, legal associations and legal management consultants. Most Toro Digital clients have teams of 20 to 200 people. We work closely with the C-suite, partners and the marketing, BD, IT and HR teams.PILLAR & SCROLLPillar & Scroll was built to support Entrepreneurial Law Firms (ELFs). We are a ‘marketing desk’ service for leaders in ELFs that:- are action-oriented and realise the need for support to bring their vision and ideas to life- value speed, high-quality outputs and value for money - are passionate about their work, clients and professional relationshipsMost Pillar & Scroll clients have team sizes of 1–30 people. We typically work with the owners/partners and practice managers.WHAT DO WE DO?You can read more about Toro Digital and Pillar & Scroll in the work experience sections below. Head Of MarketingMacpherson Kelley May 2011 - Mar 2014Melbourne, Victoria, AuThis was a national role focused on revitalising the firm’s marketing strategy and implementing marketing systems, digital marketing and leading BD for the national Workplace Relations & Safety team.Having been approached by my previous direct report at HWL Ebsworth (formerly Home Wilkinson Lowry), I was headhunted to Macpherson Kelley (formerly M+K Lawyers) to join the firm’s marketing team. As the co-head of the firm's national marketing team, the chief operating officer (COO) and I worked together to set the firm's national marketing strategy. Some of my key achievements in this role:- Played an instrumental role in growing the firm’s national Workplace Relations team through training events (paid and free), one-on-one coaching with lawyers, content marketing and leading the marketing and BD sessions at the firm’s national retreat.- Worked closely with the managing partner and COO to revive the firm’s industry strategy, encouraging senior and junior lawyers to focus their marketing efforts on industry groups they were passionate about.- Collaborated with a web design agency on behalf of the firm to build a website from scratch. This included creating persona profiles for several potential users, developing content and creating a good user experience. I also implemented a paid events section, a new initiative at the time, which became a significant income stream for the firm and a highly effective lead-generation tool.- Developed and implemented integrated marketing campaigns for several of the firm’s industry-specific events.- Established a training and induction program that supported the BD team. The program included training on writing articles that engage an audience, networking, using social media as a BD tool and a series of sessions on developing relationships with clients and referrers. -
Freelancer - Digital Marketing & CommunicationsFreelancer Oct 2009 - Aug 2012After leaving HWL Ebsworth, I set up my own freelancing business so that I could focus on completing my Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation qualification. Whilst freelancing, I completed a number of marketing plans and helped grow a number of start-up projects with my fellow students.- Developed a marketing plan for a software start-up. With limited budget and time, the start-up was able to establish itself as a tool of choice for small businesses and as a result, it was acquired by a large software business.- Developed a marketing plan and implemented a number of key projects for a financial services business. My main tasks included building a website, copywriting (both online and offline), developing marketing collateral (including graphic design) and preparing proposals for the sales team. The aggregator was acquired by a competitor for $2.5m.- Designed and implemented a website, SEO and social media strategy for a luxury pool construction business. In three years, the website generated more than 600 highly qualified leads – more than triple what the old website achieved which in an arguably tougher economic environment (coming out of the global financial crisis).

Marketing AdvisorHwl Ebsworth Jun 2007 - Oct 2009Melbourne, Vic, AuI joined Home Wilkinson Lowry as a Marketing Coordinator (graduate position) in 2006 and was promoted to a Marketing Advisor in 2007. As the sole member of the marketing team, I was responsible for all the marketing activities for the firm. This included writing tenders and proposals, running industry-specific groups, coordinating events, providing training to lawyers, web and email marketing, managing relationships with third party suppliers (graphic and web designers, photographers, etc) and public relations & media.Due to the firm’s enormous growth from 200 to 650 people during my time there, the biggest part of my role was project managing the marketing actions resulting from two major mergers (Abbott Tout and Ebsworth & Ebsworth). A key project I managed was the firm’s re-branding project from Home Wilkinson Lowry to HWL Ebsworth.I left HWL Ebsworth to dedicate most of my time to studying a Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation. I was fortunate enough to have created a fantastic network in which I was able to generate enough income to support myself during my studies.A year after I started freelancing, the COO at HWL Ebsworth left the firm and established his own consulting firm. I began working more closely with some his clients; one of which was M+K Lawyers. He was asked to join M+K Lawyers on a full-time basis and subsequently, I was asked to follow. -
