Heaton has represented his clients in agency and employment termination disputes, real estate and investment litigation, unfair trade practices and business torts, internet disparagement claims, insurance bad faith and coverage disputes, and the defense of state and national class action litigation.

While serving as as Vice President-Litigation Counsel for The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Heaton had responsibility for the direction and oversight of all of the company's litigation, including litigation and arbitration arising out of the company's insurance investment products and services, real estate investments and public and private securities investments, the company's national sales and distribution system, as well as regulatory compliance challenges. In this role, Heaton worked closely with the company's risk management and communications professionals to address enterprise liability and risk assessment, as well as corporate reputation and communications crisis management.

Heaton first joined Kravit Gass & Weber as an associate, and within three years, was named a partner, the youngest attorney to have been elected to do so in the firm's history at that time. Heaton's trial practice at Kravit Gass & Weber encompassed a wide variety of commercial disputes, with an emphasis on professional liability defense and commercial insurance coverage disputes. Heaton first joined Frisch Dudek, now known as Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek, as a law clerk, and then was hired as a litigation associate. Heaton's practice at Frisch Dudek encompassed a wide variety of commercial disputes, with an emphasis on professional liability defense and commercial insurance coverage disputes. Heaton represented clients in real estate and investment litigation, unfair trade practices and business torts, insurance bad faith and coverage disputes, and the defense of state and federal civil RICO litigation.
