I have a mathematics degree, master’s qualification and PhD.I have considerable industrial mathematical software development experience across several computer languages, over many years, whilst working as a Software Engineer. Much of this was gained whilst working at Renishaw plc where one of my responsibilities was writing the motion control software for the emerging articulating probe sensor heads.A significant amount was also gained at Jaguar LandRover where I was involved in lidar and autonomous car feature developments. The computer languages with which I am proficient are C/C++(including CLI), VB(6/.NET), C# and MATLAB.I am having to include my summary skills (historic and active) profile here rather than in my strapline because I am not allowed sufficient characters in my strapline. So my strapline should be:Allotment holder, Track & Field Athlete, Negotiator, Garden maintainer, Painter & Decorator, Store assistant, Mathematician (many areas, particularly finite group theory, revisionist, researcher), Software Engineer (integrated - front end, embedded, tester, programmer/developer, designer, installer (technician)) , Investor, Fund manager, Software developer, Website developer, Researcher, Publisher, Financial planner, Social media content creator, Author, Academic publisher, Computer technician and repairer, Handyman, Conveyancer, Protestor, Public speaker, Local historian, Meter reader, Delivery man, Clerk, Trolley attendant, Baker, Comedian, Cleaner, Waiting person, General practitioner, Consultant psychiatrist, Landlord, Postman (part time), Social Worker, Commentator, Webcam model (amateur), Locksmith advisor, Satirist, Phlebotomist, Critic, Vlogger, Cameraman, Grip, Reporter, Sound man, Narrator, Impressionist, Bathroom tiler, Editor, Carpet cleaning contractor (MA (Cantab), PhD), Stylist, Content creator, Influencer, Internet personality, Entertainer, Snow Warden, Personal Assistant, Caretaker, Street trader, Marketeer, Reviewer, Chiffonier, Runner, Producer, Raspberry, blueberry and redcurrant jam maker, Kitchen appliance repairer - white goods (undergraduate), watch accessory repairer (intern), washerman, dhobi, waste management operative, hand car washer, sous chef, marmalade maker, rag picker, dairyman (yogurt and Greek yogurt and cheese and junket maker), delicatessen.I am having to create an article (which I have posted) to more fully describe my summary skills and experiences because there is not enough room in this section ....

This contains many original results, including all necessary preliminaries, pertaining to a conjecture of Gaschutz.A 2nd Edition of this book entitled 'The Formation Generated By A Finite Group II' has also been published by BookPrintingUK (printers only). This contains further results whilst maintaining the spirit of the first edition. -

Contract Software EngineerJaguar Land Rover May 2015 - Jan 2018Warwick UniversityI wrote embedded software in C/C++ for an Arduino built device, to provide real time driver assistance information on surface features, fed from connected ultrasonic sensors. The design , coding, testing and documentation and building of the hardware was done from scratch. The microcontroller used was an Atmel Atmega2560.I wrote application software in VB.NET for controlling a Vector Network Analyzer via a GPIB interface. The same software also interfaced with a motor and rotary table combination that fed and measured the reception of an emitter/receiver GHz radio signal pair, at various orientations. Both of these units of work were in collaboration with the University of Birmingham, the research partners, and involved many visits to the University from JLR’s office, acting as project Software Engineer.I wrote application software products in C# and C++/CLI to record and process range and position information from Velodyne VLP-16 and LeddarTech lidar sensors. This was part of a project investigating the performance of each sensor as a possible candidate for autonomous car use. Both design, implementation and assessment were performed by myself.I wrote an application software product in C++/CLI to record and process range and position information from multiple lidar sensors simultaneously. This was part of work investigating automotive sensor fusion. Both design, implementation and assessment were performed by myself.I wrote a suite of static libraries in C++ for providing classes and methods to aid in lidar vehicle object recognition and tracking, in an automotive context.

Contract Software EngineerBibby Scientific Dec 2014 - Mar 2015Stone, Staffs.I was responsible for bringing the application software of a qPCR (polymerase chain reaction) scientific instrument to an acceptable standard. The work involved configuration management, and numerous software (architecture) bug fixes and enhancements. Coding was predominantly in VB with a little C++ exposure. The work was delivered complete and on time.

Contract Software EngineerClaytex Services Limited Jun 2014 - Aug 2014Leamington SpaThe work involved (i) writing a C, S-function to enable Simulink to incorporate a Functional Mockup Unit (FMU) as part of a library of blocks’ offering and (ii) writing the VB.NET front end to read and display the XML file of the FMU, and send the information to the Simulink S-function.

Contract Software SpecialistTeraview Ltd Jul 2013 - Dec 2013Cambridge, United KingdomI developed a MATLAB GUI tool for the spectral analysis of paint layer thicknesses, as measured by an optical terahertz probe. I also assisted with the Cambridge University academic collaborators’ R&D effort, to develop the underlying method. This was a Fourier spectral analysis, involving a non-linear inverse problem.

Senior Software EngineerRenishaw Mar 1997 - Mar 2013Wotton-Under-Edge, Glos.My most significant contribution at Renishaw plc was writing the real time motion control software to describe the motion of a 5 axis articulating robotic head and to allow it to measure manufactured parts. It was a ground breaking development for the Company ultimately enabling penetration of new markets and has contributed to the Company's ongoing success. Real time embedded software development (in C) was among the skills, at the level of Senior Engineer. Among my other achievements were:• I wrote software to control the scanning, by means of a laser, to reverse engineer the profile of a surface. Geometry and control theory were the disciplines involved.• I submitted an internal patent application for an idea to assist manufacturers reduce the amount of scrappage in a part to be cut. The mathematics of linear least square fits was employed.• I made a contribution to the Company’s mathematical library package. This was the calculation of Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues for a general square matrix. This was in C++.• I wrote software to determine by means of a contact scanning probe the apex of a cone, or the centre of a small hole machined in a metal block.• I have been involved in the preparation for various trade shows, including writing both the Front End (in VB 6) and the new embedded code.• I wrote a C# dll for a new way of processing the corrections during a CMM’s error map.• I wrote a MATLAB front end to measure the friction in the 5 axis articulating head.• I designed and wrote software to permit acquisition of temperature readings from external thermistors on the latest version of the controller’s hardware platform.• I wrote numerous enhancements, bug fixes etc involving mathematical algorithms, hardware interfacing. I would estimate somewhere in the region of 100,000 lines of C. -
Research OfficerNuclear Electric Oct 1990 - Sep 1993My main job was to write software that simulated the effect of the control rods in a nuclear reactor’s core. This was written in Fortran. I was responsible for design, code and test. It was written as a module as part of a larger reactor performance program. This was simulation, as opposed to real time software.
