DOING WELL BY DOING GOOD (and Vice Versa)We all grew up hearing our share of idioms - it's a "piece of cake", go and "break a leg". Idioms seem frivolous at times, but when well placed, they certainly serve a purpose. So, please "lend me your ear".As a social responsibility professional, an idiom held high is "Doing Well by Doing Good"; a saying attributed to Ben Franklin, an inventor who never sought patents for anything, as he felt it took away from the public good. I've spent more than a decade embedding these words into the hearts and minds of people across the U.S., developing strategies and programs that demonstrate how organizations can make a difference in communities, and also have a positive effect on their bottom-line.But that's only half the equation, my friend.If you're going to embrace these words, you better flip them around too. You better be "Doing Good by Doing Well". My experience has shown that social responsibility is a business in itself, and its customers and stakeholders are many and diverse. Strategies must adapt to changing needs and be nimble. Programs must be well designed and fiscally sound. Service delivery must be crisp. Relationships must be cultivated and nurtured. Customers satisfied. After all, how will others join you in doing good, if you don't do it well?I think Ben would agree.As I look for a new opportunity to make a difference, I seek an organization that embraces both versions.
