Joined as a Vehicle Mechanic, I was awarded fittest recruit at the end of basic training. After doing Vm training at Bordon I went to my first unit which was 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers based in Saffron Waldon. I then did my PTI course ( Physical Training Instructor) and was then able to work as a PTI and also a VM. I did two 6 month tours with the UN in Cyprus and was responsible for servicing and maintaining the ferret scout cars that were used to do the patrols. Sadly due to the reduction in armed forces after the cold war, they were amalgamated with 17th/21st Lancers to form the Queens Royal Lancers. 33 EOD then moved into the camp to replace the 16th /5th lancers. I worked on various equipment including some bomb disposal stuff which was a change from tanks, DAFs etc. ( any VM- vehicle mechanic reading this will know what I mean) I did a tour in Belize which involved battle area clearance before we handed Belize back, I was responsible for the fitness training and testing of the Squadron and also maintaining our vehicles.I then finished off my service with an attachment to 9 reg Army Air Corps based at Dishforth.Gained some great experience and knowledge, made some lifelong friends and learned how to think on my feet, and never give up.
