About Paul Hillert

I currently work with a small team of software and quality assurance engineers. Our team is responsible for many internal and external product offerings and continuously aims to create the best version of these products every day. I am a proponent of servant leadership and believe that creating a supportive environment for folks to grow and achieve their goals alongside the business should always be top of mind.I enjoy introspection on the software process and aim to provide meaningful changes to those processes with the goal of benefiting team members and cultivating a culture of completion and dependability. In the past I've been a part of both waterfall and agile (scrum) development paradigms to accommodate client requirements and have had the pleasure of working with many different people with different backgrounds.My background and experience with web applications started as a software developer in multiple programming languages and concepts. Beyond basic OOP, procedural programming techniques and web development, I have also implemented cross functional projects with an emphasis on web security through OpenAM (formerly OpenSSO) as well as user account management with OpenDJ, an open source active directory system.While I am currently in a people oriented role, I still remain interested in further web or systems development.     Designed, developed and maintained a host of web application solutions within a JBOSS/Maven/Java 1.6/Netbeans development environment.I Introduced the Spring 3.0 framework to the development of one of our online contest projects and was the sole developer through the entire project life-cycle. Development on this project required me to learn the New framework from the ground up without help. The project makes full use of Java Beans, Spring Security, Spring MVC and JSP. Also being used are the Annotations for AOP development for cleaner Controllers, Forms validation and security pointcuts.After the first Spring project, I was tasked with consolidating over ten web applications of the same caliber each with its own slight differences and quirks. The driving force behind the application utilized reflection and some Meta-programming to create bean classes on the fly. Database tables matching these beans are also created - enabling administrators of the system to create HTML forms that can collect arbitrary data that can be persisted, queried and reported.Other routine tasks involve retrieving and preparing data for XSL transforms, as well as creating some of those transforms our primary web content delivery system.I also maintained several of the existing contest web apps which was developed in a Ruby on Rails/mySQL environment.
