About Paulita Bennett-Martin
Snapshot: A driven professional with experience working in US, Caribbean and Meso-American coastal communities. I pull from broad and deep experiences in Oceana conservation from research and writing to community organizing and government relations. I have formal training in development, fisheries and plastics. As a Belizean-American woman, I am committed to programs that achieve diverse stakeholder engagement. As an ocean lover, I am committed to protecting the oceans for all our futures. I have experience in the development and implementation of applied research, managing programs and campaigns, and remote working. My writing has contributed to peer reviewed literature on marine debris, invasive species, and fisheries. I develop consensus and collaboration in stakeholder groups, at the national and local scales to achieve common goals. In 2019 I organized a broad coalition of partners to get a large offshore area recognized as a Hope Spot by Mission Blue, and worked with a small coalition to convince US Senator Johnny Isakson to introduce the SAVE Act in Congress. This bill is a strong example of seeking solutions for impacts through fishery technology. In 2020 I continued to grow Oceana’s US campaign presence in the US South and I was been appointed to WIDE, a select team of staff developing the organization’s global equity, diversity, and inclusion framework. In addition I developed and managed a plastic pollution workshop series in preparation to scale up for regional nodes. I also managed a short project for US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, exploring coastal climate issues in the US. In 2022 I worked closely with partners to successfully get the US Department of the Interior to phase out the use of disposable plastics. And in 2023, I co-created a plastic solutions academy program for Belize City. In addition to measurable outcomes associated with my job, I've also managed and mentored five interns, fellows, and graduate students since 2019. Assisting other ocean conservationists to find their path forward in this field is very rewarding to me. In 2023 I launches Sea of Life in Belize and am growing a grassroots organization serving local communities in the Caribbean. Expertise:Government Relations, Program Design, Research Management, Coalition Leadership, Project Management, Communications, Resource Mobilization, and Remote Field Work. Issue Areas: Sustainable Development, Fisheries, Plastic Pollution/Marine Debris, Ocean Policy, and Environmental Justice.
