International Scientific Committee (ISC): According to the ICOMOS Statutes, “The International [Scientific] Committees are the vehicles through which ICOMOS fulfills its goals by carrying out specialized studies and scientific inquiries in their respective fields on the various issues with which ICOMOS is concerned.”Earthen Architectural Heritage: For the purposes of the International Scientific Committee of Earthen Architectural Heritage (ISCEAH), earthen architectural heritage is defined as the architectural, archaeological and cultural landscape heritage constructed of unfired clay-/soil-based materials.

I lead the Structural Engineering team at Land Development and Exploration, and am responsible for all structural projects. I work closely with the Civil and Geotechnical teams providing input and assistance on those projects. Structural projects range from small scale houses, and bespoke sustainable design projects through roading, retaining walls and subdivision design to medium scale industrial buildings. We provide earthquake assessments and strengthening schemes for buildings, particularly around the Gisborne area. I am a chartered professional engineer and registered with Auckland Council as a Civil, Structural and Geotechnical engineer.

Part of a NZ government funded group of engineers and academics providing high level technical assistance and teaching in Nepal following the earthquakes there. I developed and presented lecture courses on geotechnical engineering, strengthening and demolition of earthquake damaged buildings, and unreinforced masonry assessment. I provided assessment of a number of large building in Kathmandu.

The HiveConcrete framed test station on a disused airfield outside of Swindon. The building is to be used for the long term testing of cladding panels. I designed all of the members and reviewed the reinforcement detailing.Bishop Road Primary School Steel framed primary school extension. The European funded project is taking the ModCell straw bale insulated timber panel to market, gaining all the required certifications. Removal of existing cladding and masonry, and installation of an additional steel bracing system to resist wind loading caused by additional plant placed on the existing roof (currently on site).Bristol Zoo Gorilla HouseRefurbishment and extension of Victorian listed masonry building and 1960’s insitu concrete building to allow expansion of the gorilla group. Installation of a glazed steel walkway through the buildings, new RC platforms and a 2 storey timber building for the animal keepers.

Earth Building UK is an association formed in 2009 to foster the conservation, understanding and development of building with earth in the United Kingdom.It brings together builders, academics, researchers, architects, engineers, manufacturers and many more to work in areas of common interest at a national and local level. An inaugural conference on the 16th January 2009 in Bath formally established the organisation and we look forward to growing and developing over the coming years

Based in the Ramboll Bristol office, working on a large hospital project in Sweden

New Karolinska Hospital, StockholmSeconded to Ramboll Sweden, working in the Stockholm office for 6 months. The largest PFI project in Sweden. I designed concrete foundations and structural elements to Swedish design codes. Coordination with M&E engineers, liaison with other offices involved in the project.

IInvolved in the structural design of steel and concrete, and civil engineering works including earthworks and site investigation.Eco Earthship, KinrossOwner-builder sustainable cottages on a farm in Kinross. Rammed earth and tyre bale walls, timber frame and green roof. I was approached by the client and undertook all the design and detailing for the project.Alexandra and Rochsolloch Primary School, Airdrie A single storey steel framed joint campus school outside Glasgow. The site has complex geology and topography and required a large cut and fill exercise and a number of retaining walls. I undertook the civil and structural analysis and design for the project.

I completed a PhD at Durham University studying historic rammed earth structures. I developed an improved explanation for the mechanical behaviour of mud brick buildings by considering them as a highly unsaturated soil, allowing enhanced analysis and conservation of historic structures and the development of earth as a modern sustainable construction material.
