I'm a structural and geotechnical engineer in Queenstown for eZED, working on Sustainable Building projects around Otago, Southland and wider New Zealand.I was at WSP (Opus) in Queenstown working on a great range of projects from buildings to bridges to rockfalls and retaining walls. Great to be involved in some really interesting project across New Zealand. Previously I led the Structural Engineering team at Land Development and Exploration, with projects in Auckland, Northland and on the East Cape of New Zealand. Our projects range from medium scale commercial buildings to architecturally designed housing. I provided Geotechnical and Civil engineering services on small and medium scale projects. In 2015 I was part of a New Zealand government funded group of engineers who worked in Nepal providing high level engineering expertise following the earthquakes there. I am a highly cited academic, with specific expertise in rammed earth construction and unsaturated soil mechanics, and have published a number of books, and papers relating to earth construction.Previously I've worked for Integral Engineering Design in Bath, UK, on projects such as Bristol Zoo Gorilla House, and worked with ModCell to achieve European accreditation for a prefabricated straw bale building system. As a graduate engineer I worked for Ramboll in Stockholm, Bristol and Edinburgh I received a 2.1 in Civil Engineering at Durham University, and was a recipient of the ICE QUEST scholarship. I was sponsored through university by Ramboll Whitbybird

DirectorEarth Building Uk Jan 2009 - Sep 2014Earth Building UK is an association formed in 2009 to foster the conservation, understanding and development of building with earth in the United Kingdom. It brings together builders, academics, researchers, architects, engineers, manufacturers and many more to work in areas of common interest at a national and local level. An inaugural conference on the 16th January 2009 in Bath formally established the organisation and we look forward to growing and developing over the coming years

IInvolved in the structural design of steel and concrete, and civil engineering works including earthworks and site investigation.Eco Earthship, KinrossOwner-builder sustainable cottages on a farm in Kinross. Rammed earth and tyre bale walls, timber frame and green roof. I was approached by the client and undertook all the design and detailing for the project.Alexandra and Rochsolloch Primary School, Airdrie A single storey steel framed joint campus school outside Glasgow. The site has complex geology and topography and required a large cut and fill exercise and a number of retaining walls. I undertook the civil and structural analysis and design for the project. -
Phd StudentDurham University 2004 - 2008I completed a PhD at Durham University studying historic rammed earth structures. I developed an improved explanation for the mechanical behaviour of mud brick buildings by considering them as a highly unsaturated soil, allowing enhanced analysis and conservation of historic structures and the development of earth as a modern sustainable construction material.
