About Paul Oswald
When I was 5 years old and my teacher asked what I wanted to do when I was older, did I know that I wanted to be an Agilist who puts the Customer first and helps organizations transform the way they work to deliver better results at a faster pace? Of course not! But now I’ve been living and breathing Agile for the past nine years and know this is what I was meant to do.Even though I was initially hired by Accenture as a developer, I never wrote a single line of code. My first project introduced me to the world of Agile and Scrum in what I’ll call a baptism by fire. I joined what was about to become a large-scale distributed Agile transformation as a “junior” Scrum Master with having only briefly learned about Agile in a one-hour lecture in a Project Management class in college. In my five years on this project, I gained invaluable experience in product development from inception through operation and multiple iterations of a complex web app as well as experience as a Scrum Master where I supported up to three teams at once. While continuing to play the role of Scrum Master for another client, I began sharing my previous experiences and formal training with leadership which ultimately led to coaching opportunities. Here I introduced the client to the concept of quarterly planning and identifying risks/dependencies upfront bringing all the different domains into the same room. This removed the siloes and allowed the client to address issues before they happened, rather than after. Some of my other highlights of coaching others and in embracing the Agile spirit include:1. Embodying the “Train the Trainer” mindset by helping aspiring Agile Coaches and Scrum Masters grow in their careers like those who helped me early on in my career.2. Launching ~30 teams into Agile ways of working for one client while helping them scale rapidly to 140 teams operating in Agile in two years.3. Transforming an organization’s marketing teams as their lead Agile Coach helping them to learn Agile ways of working and laying the foundation for them to scale globally. I am looking forward to continuing as an Agilist for other organizations, and who knows maybe one day I'll run into my Kindergarten teacher and proudly say what I ended up doing when I was older.
