Responsible for leading Aviva’s Group Architecture team of ~220 solution and enterprise architects in the UK. Chair of the Group Architecture Board, governing a £500m+ change portfolio across ~3500 systems globally.

Led digital architecture within Aviva’s UK markets, establishing design standards and patterns. Responsible for architecture governance and delivery within a circa £50m digital change portfolio. Lead architect for Customer Centric Architecture, which was a key pillar of the 2017-2020 IT strategy.

Led design and build of Aviva’s strategic cloud platforms. The platform was designed to support a wide variety of workloads from across the Aviva estate and ensure they all operate securely, robustly and efficiently. As part of this activity, also replaced Aviva’s ageing on-premises internet connectivity with a vastly more secure, performant and reliable cloud-based solution.

Lead Aviva’s UK based Integration, API and eSecurity teams through a major transformation from legacy integration technology to modern, cloud-hosted REST APIs. This was both a technology and skills transformation, requiring the re-skilling of the whole team.

Working as a Lead Consultant in Smart421, a small-medium sized consultancy company specialising in providing high quality architecture, design and integration resource to blue chip companies.Roles include:* Global logistics firm - Helped UK arm of this global logistics giant understand how to use SOA to help them integrate the heterogeneous parcel tracking systems they operate across the world. Follow on work for the company included setting up a European enterprise architecture practice.* Large mobile telco - Led design work on strategic online registration, authentication and authorisation platform for 20m users.* Major insurer - Lead solution designer on three large (£1-5m) projects concurrently, each providing key elements of the overall £20m programme.* Large media organisation - Senior solution designer on a B2B service-oriented CRM and Billing platform refresh, which will be responsible for managing a significant proportion of the £5billion+ revenues generated by this organisation annually.In addition to working with directly with clients, recently made responsible for the Smart421’s SOA and integration practice.

Technical Architect on a large SOA enablement and exploitation programme. The programme is based on IBM WebSphere Process Server and IBM mainframe technologies, and is the first step on an incremental enterprise-wide SOA rollout over the next 5 years.Jointly responsible for defining technical strategy, architecture and solutions for both the SOA enablement (i.e. horizontal, cross-organisation) and SOA exploitation (i.e. vertical, business value delivering) portions of this project. This includes working to define the platforms, foundation services (e.g. work and human task management, MI, security, caching), reference architecture and ultimately business solutions built on that reference architecture. Working with the business community to define an agile, model-driven analysis and design approach, and am providing consultancy on the day-to-day running of agile teams.

Amoungst several other projects, lead designer on a large-scale migration of all e-Commerce applications to a new (IBM WebSphere 6.x) platform comprising presentation and ESB layers. This project provides the first in a series of migration steps to a modern SOA; splitting business logic away from presentation and encapsulating it within re-usable enterprise services. Additionally responsible for defining target state development process, engineering practices, best practice and governance processes. These processes and practices are designed from the ground up to support high levels of reuse, flexible resourcing and automated enforcement of engineering practices and governance.Presented to 200 delegates at the IBM Service Oriented Architecture Summit, Lisbon, on pragmatic approaches to implementing service oriented architectures.

Senior member of the Norwich Union Wealth Management architecture team, responsible for technical leadership for integration technology on a £250 million project.The architecture was based on loosely-coupled enterprise services using XML and HTTP technology. Services resident on mainframe, Oracle and bespoke (batch based) infrastructure were integrated via an ESB-style hub, exploiting a canonical domain model. Partner services were encapsulated within the ESB, and exposed via an orchestration layer.
