Educational Consulting Apr 2012 - Present
    Orlando, Florida Area
An incredibly complex legal and regulatory framework has taken hold in our public education system. Unfortunately, this is not revealed to parents, even when it would help a child. For many kids, school is homework, assignments, tests, and exams, along with various extracurricular activities. For a student with an undiagnosed learning disability, the educational process becomes a living nightmare. Parents often see this as a drop in grades, negative attitude toward school or even life. By the time parents see these things, substantial damage has already taken place. There are Federal laws that mandate that school districts identify and serve the needs of exceptional students. Even so, many districts choose the "we have no budget" excuse and let these kids languish. Get this: The real intent of "no child left behind" is to carry them along until they reach age 16 and can "decide" to drop out, absolving the school district of "the problem kid".This is where advocacy typically steps in -- after severe damage has been done to the educational record and to the child's confidence, self-esteem, and motivation. My approach involves getting out in front of this runaway train and throwing the emergency brake with proactive management, getting the right testing done, developing a definitive diagnosis & action plan.By applying techniques from my professional life and years of experience motivating change, I was able to take several emergency cases and deliver results. This included using best practices from the Project Management profession by recognizing the scope of assignments, then planning the time and resources to complete the work. From Service Management, I taught how to prioritize and sequence assignments so everything gets done on time. I also showed how a positive attitude can make all the difference to the teachers!Reading: www.wrightslaw.com. Get their book: "From Emotions to Advocacy" and memorize it.Volunteer community service (non-paid) role.
