Since I was a child I’ve felt the connection between God and the Earth. The amazing diversity of life across the planet from the highest mountains to the deepest oceans, the intricate way land forms, the way weather is created...even by way we have been learning that the Earth has evolved over time and we are able to witness that it is still happening today. All of this while feeling and believing that all of life, every living thing, has a spiritual essence which connects us all through the life-force of the Earth and on out to life-force across the Universe and possibly beyond.Being that my heart guided me to these feelings and beliefs, while having a practical mind, which included studying mechanical engineering as part of my masters course work at the University of Wisconsin Madison, I found the best way to act on this sense of stewardship was by working to make our buildings as energy-efficient as possible and separating our dependence on fossil fuel resources for the heating, cooling and lighting of our buildings. It was starting in the mid-1990’s, where I worked with builders, homeowners, developers, apartment tenants and facility managers, to be a consulting guide so they could make their buildings more environmentally-friendly while simultaneously enhancing comfort and improving indoor air-quality. I did this through my previous company, Lightly Treading, Inc. where we performed energy audits, energy ratings and conducting targeted building science testing and assessment. It was during these years I came across so many individuals wanting their homes or buildings to be environmentally-friendly, even though the market was not expressing an overwhelming demand for these buildings. I found these people inspiring for wanting to do more with their buildings, often as a means of giving back to the rest of us. It is these people, and their inspiring buildings, that we are showcasing through the Heart of a Building videos and website. It is my belief that more people want to combine their hearts with their technical and financial expertise to build more environmentally-friendly, sustainable and regenerative buildings but often time don’t know how to it. By seeing and hearing the stories of people who have done it, along with having access to these inspiring project’s architectural plans, engineering specifications, educational/marketing materials and project costs, that I believe provides others with a path to create, build and operate more and more buildings which are expression of love for the Earth and for God.
