KDOT commissioned the project, but the software is used by hundreds of people throughout the nation at other DOTs and consultant design firms. Continued the development of a software and database called FIXS (Fabrication error Indexed eXamples and Solutions). FIXS is a project organized by the Steel Bridge Collaboration in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). 15 states throughout the country have contributed to the FHWA pooled fund. The project’s goal was to resolve issues arising during fabrication of steel bridges. The thesis I developed to complete my Master's degree was the early stages of a Steel Bridge Collaboration standard currently in development, S2.1-2008, Steel Bridge Fabrication Guide Specification. During the 5th and final year of my undergraduate curriculum, I was involved with projects dealing with structural steel and bridges for the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). The majority of my time was spent on extensive development and improvement of the documentation and user interface for bridge design software called, TAEG (Torsional Analysis for Exterior Girders). TAEG is a program developed with Visual Basic to analyze the effects of torsion on exterior girders during concrete deck placement.
