I managed 3 staff running and upgrading various elements of the BBC iPlayer system; principally the large scale capturing and processing of video using an estate of over 200 physical servers. I oversaw huge improvements in reliability and delivery times, using scripting and web application development to work around limitations of the software platform, and by paying keen attention to monitoring, including the developing of platform throughput monitoring to provide early warning of problems.

I had overall responsibility for all IT operations within the UBC Media Group, managing a team of five. As well as 90 internal desktop users with Windows and Novell Netware, this included high-availability networking, LAMP and Java-based DAB applications used by media clients around the world to provide EPG, dynamic text and audio distribution. I worked directly with clients to provision new services, provide user training and communicate scheduled outages and I was the main point of escalation for all service incidents.

A hands-on architecture role where I developed various systems to support DAB radio in the UK, including dynamic text, EPG and media distribution. The role encompassed provision of infrastructure, including WAN links and installation of servers into hosting facilities and onto customer sites, and development of software presented to clients via web-based service portals. With this I pioneered the development of SaaS solutions within the media industry before they were called SaaS.

I started as the sole IT support administrator for what was then known as The Unique Broadcasting Company and its subsidiary Unique Facilities. By September 2000 the company had doubled in size and floated as UBC Media, and I had a team of three running all internal IT and early iterations of the media distribution software which I would come to develop further in my next role.
