Becoming a Certified Financial Planner trained me to review client’s needs and look for alternatives to the standard risk transference i.e. buying an insurance policy. Too often insurance agents do not discuss the multiple risks that could impair or financially ruin your business. These discussions are important because they allow you to determine if you want to transfer that exposure to an insurance carrier or to self-insure.What happens when the claim falls outside of the 4 main areas? Are you self insuring? Examples:• If you are a manufacturer with products being sold worldwide, did you know only claims brought in the U.S. or Canadian court systems are covered by a standard insurance policy. • What happens when you are sued for economic harm because there was no property damage or bodily injury to third parties? Do you know how the insurance carrier will apply the exclusion “Your Work”? This exclusion is in ever insurance policy. • If you are a company with more than $200,000 in premiums, have you ever thought about a program that returns premiums (underwriting profits)? I assist my clients in making informed business decisions as it relates to risk and insurance. Price is always a consideration when buying insurance but not discussing exposures leaves your business open to financial ruin.
