In December 1997 Active Imaging were taken over by Silvermines, an Irish company which owned a number of other companies in the electrical and electronic industry. I was placed in the CCTV Division, later renamed Security Division. Moved onto the Mv2000 project, a digital CCTV security version of the Mv range, which had been under development by a third party for some time. Did extensive testing, and then moved onto a series of enhancements to the graphical front end (written in IBM's Visual Age for C++) mainly for archiving of recorded images and control of pan/tilt/zoom cameras. In February 1999 joined the Visilynx III project, creating an updated version of the Visilynx II video switch matrix for CCTV applications. Worked on subsystem design and implementation of embedded code using the Hitachi H8S microcontroller. At some point after that Silvermines were taken over by Bewator (which is currently part of Siemens).

In September 1995 T-Cubed was taken over by DataCell, a value added reseller for imaging products. A new company, Active Imaging, was formed specialising in imaging products. Took FIDRI nearly to completion and then with another software engineer took over and finished off the low level API for the Mv range of "intelligent networked cameras". These were embedded PCs with an onboard CCD sensor and connections for five external cameras, containing a PC104 based 486 processor card and an Active Imaging framegrabber card. The operating system was Neutrino, a new Unix-like embedded OS from QNX. Completed and tested the "virtual" API, which abstracted the hardware so that a user could write code as if they had six independent cameras. Developed Flash file system support and a Windows based test program which displayed images from the camera after retrieving them over the network.Tested and supported a custom version of the framegrabber card and APIs for TrafficMaster. Support continues occasionally even now. Finished off FIDRI and took through acceptance testing.
Joined T-Cubed, a small electronics firm. Started designing and writing the software for a "Format Independent Tape Recorder" (FIDRI) for DERA, the research arm of the MOD. FIDRI is a VME based rack containing a PowerPC and two RISC based boards which convert sonar data from one format to another. Wrote the graphical front end in Visual C++ under Windows NT on the PowerPC board, and the embedded data conversion software in C for the RISC boards.
