True Crime Japan is based on cases heard at Matsumoto District and Summary Courts over a 12-month period in 2013 and 2014. It is, I believe, unique as an English-language effort to describe and explain Japan's crime and society using courtroom cases as a lens. In as much as possible I interviewed defendants and their relatives, neighbours and friends as well as lawyers and others connected with their cases. In the book you can learn about Japan's recent explosion in elderly crime, the yakuza (mafia), tough treatment of marijuana smokers, Japanese prison conditions, the overall crime rate and what we might (or might not) learn from Japan's criminal justice system.
