Besides research (with close to 180 peer-reviewed publications), Paulo Oliveira is also involved in teaching University of Coimbra, as well as in other Universities in Portugal and elsewhere. He has maintained a consistent primary role in the organization of national and international scientific meetings, and science awareness activities. Since April 2013, Paulo Oliveira is also Councilor at the European Society for Clinical Investigation. Paulo is currently Principal Investigator at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology and the leader of the MitoXT – Mitochondrial Toxicology and Experimental Therapeutics laboratory.Paulo Oliveira has advanced the state of art in several important areas related with mitochondrial biology, namely understanding mechanisms of disease and drug-induced mitochondrial stress/toxicity responses and the protection afforded by mitochondrial-directed antioxidants agents. Paulo has also investigated how mitochondria can be a target in anti-cancer therapy, especially through the use of molecules that are chemically designed to accumulate in the mitochondrial matrix. Paulo has obtained consistent funding for his research team, which has granted him with more than one million euros.
