I am an experienced regulator, having worked previously for the General Medical Council, where I advised on the development of the licence to practice and led work to review advice to doctors on requests for assisted suicide; and for the General Social Care Council, where as part of the Social Work Education Group I streamlined the quality assurance process for universities and supported education regulatory policy and the cross-UK external examiner system.Today I hold the organisational brief for Social Work England on policy relating to specialist social work practice. I have led the creation of new education approval standards for mental health and mental capacity specialist course (AMHP and AMCP). My professional focus is on determining and promoting what good, proportionate, well-evidenced and intelligent regulation can do to help social workers—individually, and as a whole profession—to deliver the best possible outcomes for the people they support.
