The two full-time IT guys had gotten additional training and left when they received their certificates. A vital database had vanished without backups. Wiring was an undocumented rat's nest. And in a final insult, the entire News Department network went down overnight, forcing writers to post news show scripts with Microsoft Word and transfer the documents to the TV studio prompters using floppy disks. Paul found and cleared data loops. He learned the phone system and fired a consultant. He backed up databases daily and sent tapes daily to our transmission site. Paul hired assistants--one a college dropout, and the other a messenger from Bulgaria who happened to be the most degreed and certified IT guy we had ever met. They could work our level 3 Cisco switches and deliver customer-friendly service to our 200 employees. Then Paul no longer needed any consultants. He saved thousands by getting rid of unneeded dedicated data lines and setting up virtual private networks to remote offices. He and his technicians cleaned up and documented internal wiring, removed hundreds of yards of aging twinax, and installed dedicated data racks with proper air flow and backup power. When Cox Business Services and Cablemas set-up a 400 megabit data line between our San Diego studio and Tijuana master control site, Paul and his crew set up VLANs, voice-over-IP circuits, safe internet, live video transfer capabilities, and media file transfers to 300 megabits per second--all without interfering with each other. As if that wasn't enough to do, in 2008, Paul was able to meet or exceed the rigorous Sarbanes-Oxley standards demanded by auditors. I don’t know how much money he and his department has saved San Diego 6 TV because there’s no meter running to measure a great IT system. But network outages are rare, the email arrives through weather fair and foul, spam gets left at the door, and our data is always there where it’s expected.
