As the AVP of External Affairs, Paul serves as Max Planck Florida’s ambassador representing MPFI in scientific matters to the academic, business, scientific/technology, and government sectors, providing oversight of MPFI’s external partnerships, collaborations, and agreements in partnership with Institute leadership. Sets the direction and strategy for engaging with external entities to diversify MPFI’s funding portfolio and fosters the development of the local life sciences ecosystem and opportunities for technology transfer. Paul also provides direction and oversight of MPFI’s legislative appropriations requests, scientific events, and graduate programs.

Partnering with Max Planck Germany, MPFI leadership, and other academic institutions, Paul is responsible for executing programming and related aspects of program operations for postbaccalaureate fellows, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows while also serving in a mentoring role to participants related to the program and career advice and guidance.

Paul completed a postdoctoral research fellowship under Dr. Ryohei Yasuda, Scientific Director of MPFI, using two photon FRET/FLIM imaging in brain slices to study novel protein signaling dynamics in dendritic spines that underly synaptic plasticity. Paul received an individual F32 NRSA fellowship from the NIH BRAIN Initiative.

Paul Evans earned his PhD in Neuroscience from Emory University where he elucidated a novel calcium-dependent mechanism by which the signaling protein RGS14 blocks learning/memory and synaptic plasticity in the CA2 region of the hippocampus. Paul received an individual pre-doctoral training fellowship (F31 NRSA) from NIH/NINDS, and completed ambitious collaborative training in the labs of Serena Dudek and Ryohei Yasuda.Paul was also active in leadership roles during his doctoral training at Emory University serving as President of the Graduate Student Council (2013-2014, Divisional Assembly for all students in the Laney Graduate School of Arts and Sciences) and Co-President of Graduates in Neuroscience (2012-2014).

Paul coordinates tours of local life sciences companies for Ga Bio members to promote the growth and interests of the bioscience industry in Georgia. The industry tours program exposes early stage scientists to the breadth of careers available and facilitates networking with industry leaders. Industry tour hosts include such organizations as ATDC (Advanced Technology Development Center), Osmotica Pharmaceutical, Dendreon Corporation, Yerkes National Primate Research Center, EndoChoice, Merial Ltd, USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, and others.
